CHAPTER ONE

.10  INTRODUCTION

1.1  BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Co-operative is an association of person faced same economic problem who voluntarily pulled their resources on the basis of equality through joint effort and mutual participation to remedy their plight.

Others defined co-operative as a society a group of person’s who pull their resource to produces, buy and sell goods among themselves for mutual benefits; coady international institute however defined co-operative as a free association of person legally constructed for the purpose of conducting an economic enterprise or business which they control and administer democratically according to establishment principle techniques. Each of the definition highlights the point the first is the voluntary nature of the association. In other words people agree on the own to form co-operative societies. No authority or body legislates or order that a co-operative society must exist in a particular area.

Secondly, collective efforts are identified in co-operative. This means that peoples’ endeavor are geared towards the success and betterment of the co-operative last collective control emphasized by implication if there is ay benefit which accures to the co-operative society, this  belongs to all member by the same token in case of any problem that arises the society are such a problem collectively or jointly.

No matter which ever way it is considered co-operative society is an association of people having the same economic problem and who voluntary agreed to pull their source mutual participation to enable them achieved their common aims and objectives.

Co-operative movement started first in Rod dale England on the 15t August and 2 Female. This movement was formed as a resource of organized and industrial revolution which occurred in England, during which period drastically change took place in agriculture industry and commerce.

To over come some of the hardship prevalent during that period, these 28 workers formed the first c0-operative society known as Equitable pioneers of Rochale since than thousands of c0-operative societies have been formed in many countries of the world for example, in the united state along, 5554 co-operative organization handle 18 percent of farm supplies in 1974-1075 cropping vam by 1975 there were about 450,000 members of co-operative societies in Nigeria and this constituted 15 percent of the country’s working population.

1.2  STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

One of the problem facing the country today is unemployment; graduates lived out every year without having enough work to do or not having worked that makes full use of skills and abilities.

This is because of lack of proper awareness of being self employed through organizing co-operative society. These people could come together and hardness their resources for the purpose of gainful employment. Again, it was also discovered that the co-operative societies which are in existence are poorly funded and have poor internal administration. Beside, people are not properly in formed of the need for the co-operative society.

Investigations had revealed that there are many factors militating against efficient performance of co-operative society. Which if properly addressed with erect employment for he unemployment masses.
