This study investigated factors that affect the implementation of physical education classroomrnassessments in selected high schools of Gurage Zone. Specifically, the study sought to gain anrnunderstanding of the extent to which teachers use different classroom assessment methods andrntools to understand and to support both the learning and teaching processes in physicalrneducation. Through a descriptive survey study was conducted using 165 grade 9 and grade 10rnphysical education students, 8 physical education teachers and 5 physical education departmentrnheads. Students were selected using random sampling techniques while physical educationrnteachers and department heads were selected using pervasive sampling techniques. The studyrnused a questionnaire to establish both grade 9 and grade 10 physical education students andrnteachers perceptions of classroom assessment, and interviews as main sources of data collection.rnThe data suggest that both students and teachers perceive classroom assessment as a positivernactivity. As a result of inadequate assessment knowledge and training, most assessment methodsrnare ineffective and assessment types as tests that teachers give to their students at specified timernintervals. Since teachers perceived classroom assessment as tests, they showed limited ability tornuse different methods and tools to assess their students while teaching physical educationrnpractical lessons. Their perceptions of classroom assessment have influence on their classroomrnassessment practices. Teachers’ experience and teacher education program did not seem torncontribute much to teachers’ perceptions of classroom assessment; however, teacher’s academicrnqualification seemed to influence teachers’ flexibility to accept new physical educationrnassessment methods. In addition to these, in all selected schools in Gurage Zone, suitability ofrnschools and classrooms environment, inadequate school facilities, and unavailability of sportrnequipments were found to be among the most affecting factors in the effective implementation ofrnphysical education classroom assessments in selected schools of the Zone.rnKey Words: Implementation, Classroom Assessment, Physical Education, Perception, SchoolrnFacilities and Classroom Environment
