THE IMPACT OF EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT OF RESOURCES IN SOLVING UNEMPLOYMENT PROBLEM IN NIGERIA (A CASE STUDY OF OJI-RIVER LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA ENUGU STATE)

ABSTRACT

This study is on a strong impression of effective  management of resources in solving unemployment problem in Nigeria. This researcher want to know the impact of effective management of resources in solving unemployment problem in Oji-River Local Government Area, how they have carried its operations to bring this phenomenon to its best minimum in order to achieve this an empirical survey and library research were carried out. The sources of data used include both primary and secondary data. The primary source of data are the administration of questionnaires and oral interviews while the secondary sources include statistical tools used in testing hypothesis. The research reveals that the local government has not put the necessary machinery in place to tackle unemployment. One reason being lack of managerial skill operating in the area. This factor has been a force milting against solving unemployment problem. It was discovered also that the Local Government under study engages in various activities and scheme including provision of pipe borne water, rural electrification project to attract investors to harness the available natural resources to create employment for the people. Besides lack of infrastructure has equally contributed to non improvement of unemployment situation.

INTRODUCTION

1.1      BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Unemployment has been and still a major problem in Orji-River Local Government Area of Enugu State. A study recently carried out by researcher showed that 80% of the labour force in the local government are unemployed people in Oji-River is made up of youth and young school levers whose member in the labour market is on the increase yearly because of the high rate of people graduating from both the secondary and tertiary institution.

A few of them who are employed solely depend on the government and a greater percentage of them year for the non-existent non governmental organization or corporate bodies for their caused labour which according to Byrness and Stone (1981, 147) “people are only unemployment when they are unable to work and would be willing to accept a prevailing wage paid to people that posed the skill they have but either cannot find or have not yet joined suited employment” Byrness believed that a person becomes unemployed when he has a required skilled to sell to an employer who is willing to buy his skill for a wage.

The problem of  unemployment can be reduced if the already existing establishment within Oji-River local government area are effectively management. Effective management of scarce resources in Oji-River will reduce unemployment and the depended on government corporate bodies as the last hope for job sackers for engaging income generating ventures. As a matter of facts this will put smile on the faces of school leavers who will be assured that they can be gainfully engaged and acquire proficiency in desired skills through their engagement in profitable of any establishment.

 

1.2      STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The problem on how unemployment can be solved by the effective management of resources is the core of the study. The researcher intend to find out what effect, effectively managed residues will have in the reduction of unemployment rate in Oji-River local government area.
