THE IMPACT OF JOB SATISFACTION ON PRODUCTIVITY

(A CASE STUDY OF UNIC INSURANCE COMPANY LTD)

ABSTRACT

The need for increase productivity in our industries totally cannot be  over emphasized. This is  evidenced by the development of new technologies to the highest level. Man is needed in concert with other resources. However, man’s behavior cannot be objectively predicted given the complexity of intervening variable that to a large extent determined his behaviour. But there is as general belief that the ability of man to push up productivity in the industry of company depends on how satisfied  he is  whether this is rue or not is the issues that this research is deigned to find out.

Thus, this research project intends to find out if there is any relationship  between  job satisfaction and productivity ther is, what kind  of relation?

Unic  insurance company was chosen as a case study in order to effectively carryout the study, data was collected by the use of self administered questionnaire.

Finally, to carryout a  successful research work, this study will be divided into five chapters, and each of the chapters will exhausting and clearly dealt with in the main text of the study.

INTRODUCTION

1.1     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Historically significant proportion of management literature has focused on the problems, system and techniques of maintaining high levels of employee performance. According to Kuznits and Hammons  (1929. Vol 50, No 4p 236-242). Frederick Taylor’s turn off the century effort to obtain a fair day’s work for a fair day’s pay, resulted in the creation and wide speed implementation of a number of scientific principals to work setting, including tire and motion study, performance standards, employee training and incentive pay system.

In the 1930’s, the industrial world turned its attention from  human engineering to human relations and Harvard psychologist.

Elton Mayo revealed the impact of social and psychological factors on workers satisfaction morals and productivity at western electrics Hawthorne plant. And today, the groundwork laid by Taylor and Mayo has resulted in a wide and often contradictory variety of theories and principles designed to push workers productivity and organizational effectiveness to highest levels possible.

Newspaper headlines tell of a growing disenchantment with one example of   the disenchantment was noted in a recent WALL STREET JOURNAL article (FALVVI 1990) Nordstorm, a  high service high performance company is struggles with employees. Problems among the “Nervous Nordes as employees like to cell themselves there is growing dissatisfaction. The articles noted that Nordies are under increased pressure to work  many hours without pay in an environment of constant pressure any harassment that incites employees to pay for each other while the pressure of Nordisstorm may be some what unique their  problems with work are not unique. A recent issue of for TUNE UNCUMENTED the fact  this disenchantment  is not just  a problem with employees but with middle managers as well Farharm (1989.p 81-82).

One story after another describes frustration but out and out hostility, strikes and physical sabotage is not uncommon within many organization this neglect and objectives for which such organization existed.

Organization whether large or small have certain objective which they want to achieve. The attainment of this objective is a measure of the effectiveness, productivity and jobs satisfaction of  members of the organization. It should be noted that organization with building not be productive without ensuring that their workers are satisfied with their job Chinedu Christian Ukaeabu (1987 Vol. 23, No 1 and 2, p. 14-22) therefore in order to the effective and productive it is important to examine the activities feelings and experience of individuals who work in such organization. According to Shureslzer and Bengh (1979. Vol 123 No a and 2 ) “Nigeria scientist and engineers may not be effectively  utilized in the economy because their working condition are un-motivating.

In Abel Ubeku’s opinion (1978 Vol No 704 .35). “Once people  including the ordinary citizens detect that the money  they had helped in accumulating is being wasted on frivolous and useless project or ventures, rather than in the interest and continued growth and development of the organization to which they belong their loose interest.

This according to him is a common phenomenon in  indigenous  business. The owner of the business uses the project made to either acquire more views or  throw frequent parties or  build houses. Its staff do not feel they have a  share in all these and so they loss interest.

Finally, it is well-known fact that all business organization strives any aim at increasing or improving productivity in order to achieve the organization objective. The researcher feels that   it will  serve a useful purpose to ascertain whether an organization’s productivity can be improved by improving the job satisfaction of employee of  such  organization. Hence the selection of the topic. THE IMPACT OF JOB SATISFACTORY ON PRODUCTIVITY.

 

1.2     STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS

Over the years, a number of researchers have attempted to study and analyze the relationship that exist between employees job satisfactory and productivity most of these researchers often succeed in coming up with explainable and complex results and relationship.

Some comes up with uncoordinated  results while others were unable to determine whether it is productivity  that causes job satisfaction. This study will therefore attempt to probe further or deeper into the different function or factors on job satisfactions and their effect  on productivity in Unic insurance company  employees with a view of coming out with a more concrete  explanation and their relationships.

 

 

 

1.3     PURPOSE OF THE  STUDY

The foregoing discussion has centered on the for employees job satisfaction and productivity. Very few empirical studies if any had been conducted   by Nigeria scholars and satisfaction and their  productivity.

This study will therefore seek to undertake both descriptive and empirical analysis of employee job satisfaction in Unic insurance company Ltd with a  view of determining whether there is any relationship between the variable under consideration.

Also to examine how Unic insurance company Ltd encourages job satisfaction and productivity self-projects in the insurance company.

Lastly, the problems is any military against the effort of Unic insurance company limited  towards job satisfaction on their productivity.

 

1.4     SIGNIFICANT OF THE STUDY

It is important to mention that this study dealt theoretically and practically with Unic insurance company limited. Practically, it will refers the knowledge of practicing managers and business scholars about the managers non-managers and measures of productivity. This study is also significant because it will help to unveil to the board of directors other dements/disadvantages inherit in not embarking  on good policies and  practices management many have for job satisfaction towards productivity.

Moreover, this study is significant  because sub-sequent findings are recommendation of the study will enable the insurance company to learn from other mistake and effect changes where necessary.

It is also the hope of the researcher that this will serve as a kind of spring board for other(s) would be researchers, especially those who would like to research more on job satisfaction and productivity.

 

1.5     SCOPE OF STUDY

The focus of this project is Unic insurance company.

The study will be limited to the headquarters of the company which is located in Enugu due to time constraint, it is rot  possible to extend this study to the branches of the  company. The researchers will endeavors to find out the types of incentives offered to salesmen by the company and the effects of such incentives on productivity.

 I as the researcher was faced with some constraints while carrying out this study. One of the constraints faced is time limitation. As a final year students I have to use the limited time at my disposal partly for this project and fairly for my other academic work.

A thorough research work imposes a huge financial burden, which cannot be   borne by a student of my statue for this reason, this research work had to be restricted to the headquarters of the company. I also  faced some problems while collecting data for my project. I had to cal on my officials of company several times before I, could see them.

The obvious result is that conclusion drawn from available information might be highly venerable and defectives.

 

1.6            RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS

 

Ho Regular wages and promotion of workers in Unic insurance company          increase productivity.

H1 Regular wages and promotion of workers in Unic insurance company will   not increase productivity.

 

1.7     DEFINITION OF TERM

A. Job satisfaction-        Means increase in productivity.

B.      Productivity-        Means in industry production.

C.      Work-         A task which employee is assigned to perform.

D.      Incentives-  It is those stimulus that makes one to act in a particular way.

E.      Goals-         it is the end to which organization strives towards achieving.

F.      Organization-       It is an act of organizing a body of people, company, school etc. it is the structure of relations that exist between positives in a group.

G.      Management-       It is the act of getting things done through other.

H.      Employee-  Those employed to work in an organization.
