The Hexafluorotantalate(V)-selective coated-graphiternelectrode was prepared by using a Brilliant Greenhexafluorotantalate(rnV) extract in 1-chloronaphthalene with arnPVC matrix. The electrode body was prepared by fixing arngraphite rod to one end of a glass tube housing a copper coil, rnso that the electrode is in contact with it. The potentialrnmeasurement with the coated-graphite electrode was made againstrna sintered ground glass diaphragm (Ag/AgCl) external referencernelectrode. The concentrations of sulphuric and hydrofluoricrnacids, for optimum response of the electrode tornhexafluorotantalate (V) were found to be 1 M in the testrnsolutions. The response characteristics of the electrode havernbeen evaluated, and the electrode was found to respond tornhexafluorotantalate(V) in the concentration range of 5.0 x 10~rn- 5.0 X 10-3 M tantalum (V) with a Nernstian slope ( 58±1 mV perrndecade) and the detection limit of 8.0 x 10-7 M.rnThe effects of forty diverse ions on the electrodernresponse to the hexafluorotantalate (V) have been studied tornevaluate the selectivity of the electrode, and the electrodernwas found to be highly selective to hexafluorotantalate(V). Thernnewly developed coated-graphite electrode has been applied tornthe determination of tantalum in tantalite-columbite ores andrnseveral artificial matrices by direct, standard addition, rnsample addition and Gran's plot potentiometric techniques. Thernexperimental results are found to be in good agreement with thernactual or certified values.
