The intent of this study is to investigate the incorporation ofrnenvironmental issues pertinent to the natural environment in thernlower grades (Grades 5 and 6) of the first cycle primaryrncurriculum prepared for Oromia Region. Science and socialrnstudies textbooks were used for the analysis because thesernmaterials are more relevant to environmental education.rnThe methodology employed for the study is content analysis.rnDescriptive survey method is also used to strengthen the datarnobtained from content analysis. A statistical test was conductedrnto ascertain the reliability of coding between the two coders usedrnfor coding. To attain the intended objectives of the study, fiverndifferent types of coding sheets were developed by a researcherrnand used by the coders. Questionnaires and focus grouprndiscussions were also employed. Trial run was conducted for allrndata collecting instruments. In addition to the data throughrncontent analysis, 90 teachers and 73 students were used asrnsources of the data.rnThe findings of the study show that the textbooks do notrnsatisfactory to incorporate environmental issues. Particularlyrnsocial studies materials for both grades lack many ofrnenvironmental elements. Significant numbers of objectives in thernsyllabuses were not explained in the textbooks. Some of therntopics that tend to present environmental education in sciencernrnmaterials are not in the order suggested in the syllabuses and tornthe interest of the learners. Hence, it is recommended thatrnOromia Education Bureau and subject experts in the Bureaurnhave to use the findings of this study and conduct a thoroughrnstudy on the other aspects of environmental education in therncurriculum that are not covered in this study
