It is believed that the quality of classroom instructionrnlargely determines students' achievement in the learningrnprocess. The issue of testing instructional effectiveness hasrnbeen addressed by different researchers in the area ofrnteaching in many forms and con ten ts. In view of this, thernpurpose of this study was to examine effective use ofrnexplanation technique by geography teachers in selectedrnSecondary schools in Addis Ababa.rnTo this effect, sixteen geography teachers were selectedrnfrom four secondary schools in Addis Ababa. Observation checklistrnhaving various categories of explanation technique wasrnset as the data gathering instrument. The data then procuredrnthrough classroom observation and analysed using statisticalrnmethods such as percentage distribution and chi-squarernstatistical test for these statstical method are foundrnappropriate to the study.rnThe results of the study revealed that the extent tornwhich teachers use explanation was confined to presenting merernfactual contents. It was also indicated that appropriaternselection and use of explanation skills was not ascertained .rnFurthermore, teaching qual i ti es tha t encourage in tegra ti vernlearning were so minimal. Finally, it was found out thatrndescriptive explanation has been the most frequently usedrnexplanation type
