The main objective of this study was to conduct an assessment on Parent TeacherrnAssociations' participation in the management of primary schools in Addis Ababa. The studyrnwas envisaged to identify the strengths and weaknesses. Having identified the weaknesses andrnstrengths, it was intended to forward alternative recommendations. To achieve the objective,rnPTA's level of participation in the management of schools, its role in the teaching learningrnprocesses, and the major problems that should be tackled were investigated.rnThe research methodology used in this study was descriptive survey. To this end, surveyrnquestionnaires and interview question were administered to a sample of 300 subjects made uprnof 70 PTA members, 70 KETB members 20 principals, 100 teachers, 20 Kebele educationrnexperts and 20 sub city education experts. A total of 244 (81%) copies of questionnaire werernproperly filled in and returned. In addition to this, interview was also conducted with schoolrnprincipals and kebele education experts to retrieve the necessary information. Resultsrnobtained were analyzed by using descriptive methods such as percentages and chi-squarerntests.rnThe result of this study shows that the participation of Teacher - Parent Associations inrnpreparation and implementation of school plan was average. Their participation in decisionrnmaking pertaining to school policy, in hiring and firing of teachers was low. Theirrnparticipation in disciplinary hearings suffers the same problem. The administration of schoolrnbudget did not receive adequate involvement of PTA members. The task of mobilizing therncommunity so as to raise funds for the school was also of a limited scope. The degree of PTA'srninvolvement concerning monitoring and evaluation .. was not high. Principals effort inrnsupporting PTA members has also shortcoming. However, Parent-Teacher Associationsrninvolvement in teaching and learning activities such as increasing enrolment, minimizingrndropout rates, and in securing support from the community seems encouraging. Based on thernfindings it is recommended that PTA members have to be involved in the management ofrnschools, that they should be encouraged to participate at every level. It was also cited thatrnmechanisms for self evaluation be developed and means of training be sought for PTArnmembers
