The main purpose of this study was to assess the practice and problems of principal’s rnperformance appraisal in primary schools of Ilu Woreda, South West Shoa. To accomplish this rnpurpose, descriptive survey design was used which is supplemented by quantitative and rnqualitative research approaches.The study was carried out in 12 randomly selected schools of Ilu rnWoreda, South West Shoa. Then, 147 teachers in the sample schools, 31 principals, 60 PTAs, five rncluster supervisors, and three Woreda experts participated in the study. In case of sampling rntechniques, simple random sampling technique was used for teachers and parent teacher rnassociations and purposive sampling techniques was also used for cluster supervisors, and rnWoreda experts. The questionnaire was the main instrument of data collection. Interview and rndocument analyses were also utilized to substantiate the data obtained through the questionnaire. rnPercentage was employed to analyze the profile of respondents. The data gathered through rnquestionnaire were analyzed through SPSS particularly mean and standard deviation.The rnqualitative data obtained through document analysis, FGD and document analysis were analyzed rnby narration. The findings revealed that in Ilu Woreda, South West Shoa Zone, in the selected rnprimary schools, principal’s performance appraisal was not successfully implemented. The rnfindings indicated that appraisers were not satisfied with the current principals performance rnmethods, there were no clear criteria, formats, appraisers had no enough knowledge and rnunderstanding about principals performance appraiser, there were no uniform appraisers in rnrespect to the criteria. In Ilu Woreda primary sampled schools there were no well-organized rnprincipal’s performance appraisal. Based on the findings, it is fair to recommend that: 1) the rncriteria of PPAs should be align with the goal and objectives of the school. 2) The appraisers of rnPPAs in all primary schools of the Woreda should be uniform and the Woreda should establish rntraining for teachers, principals, and PTAs about the performance appraisal of principals
