Addis Ababa is one of the highly populated urban and industrial centers inrnthe country. A considerable amount of waste is generated every day fromrndifferent point and non point sources. Since the city has inadequate solidrnand liquid waste management facilities, wastes generated from differentrnsources end up in many of the rivers and streams in the city. Bulbula Riverrnis one of them.rnThe objective of the study was to assess the sources of pollutants and theirrnsinks such as plants and soils thereby to suggest possible managementrnpractices for Bulbula riverbank and forward ways to prevent the river fromrndegradation and pollution.rnWater, soil and plant samples were collected from three different locationsrnalong the Bulbula River, namely the upper, middle and lower zones. Majorrnpollutants were identified from relevant literature and all samples werernanalyzed for the same.rnThe water analysis result indicated that there is sever pollution of thernstream by Cl- , PO4rn-3, Mn2+ and Fe2+ due to high amount of wastes disposedrninto the Bulbula River from solid and liquid Municipal sources, constructionrnareas, fuel stations, garages, Hospitals and congested settlements.rnSimilarly, the soil analysis result indicated that much of the P, N, Mn2+,rnFe2+, Zn2+ and Cu2+ are stored in the soil in the middle and lower zones.rnThis may show that the soil serves as a sink to many of the pollutantsrngenerated from various sources.rnThe plant analysis result generally indicated that the species Arundo donaxrnabsorbs Fe2+, Mn2+ and Zn2+ than Cu2+, N and P, at the middle and lowerrnzone of Bulbula River bank, which are sites where much of the pollutantsrnget into the river. The species Arundo donax accumulated high amount ofrnIXrnFe2+and Mn2+ (an amount considered toxic to many crops), withoutrndeveloping chlorotic symptoms.rnSince the species Arundo donax reduces excess metals from the stream andrnstream banks, planting of Arundo donax along the banks of Bulbula Riverrncould serve the best management practice.rnKey words: - Bulbula River, Arundo donax, Phytoextraction, riverbank,rnRiver pollution, uncontrolled waste disposal.
