Drinking water is a basic necessity for all human beings. Sanitation and hygiene are vital tornensure public health through clean water supply. Hence, a descriptive study was conducted tornassess the quality of drinking water supplied to the residents of Debre Birhan town at the pointrnof water source, disinfection point, and distribution system. The water handling practice andrnsanitary condition in town was also studied. Data were collected using analysis of water samplesrnand questionnaire responses to know water handling practices of the residents. Forty-onerntriplicate water samples were collected from 9 boreholes, 2 disinfection point, 15 end user tapsrnand 15 household containers by stratified simple random selection method. All water samplesrncollected were analyzed for temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, turbidity, free chlorinernresidual, faecal coliform, total coliform, sodium, lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, nitrate andrnphosphate insitu and Ethiopian Conformity Assessment Enterprise former Quality and StandardrnAuthority of Ethiopia laboratory. Total coliform and faecal coliform were determined usingrnMembrane Filtration method, metal ions using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy and the restrnphysicochemical parameters using field laboratory equipments. Three hundred eighty-twornsamples of households were selected for the questionnaire by stratified simple random selectionrnmethod. Mean values of temperature, pH, turbidity, free chlorine residual (FCR), faecal coliformrnand total coliform at end users taps were 13.8 oC, 7.4, 0.16 NTU, 0.12 mg/L, 0 CFU/100 mL andrn0.27 CFU/100 mL, respectively. All values complied with WHO (2008) guideline except for FCR.rnAnalysis of inorganic ions of sodium, lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, nitrate and phosphaternwere 11.0 mg/L, 2.2μg/L,
