A Survey Of The Leisure Reading Interests Of Addis Ababa University Students

This survey of the leisure reading interests of AAU studentsrnis a descriptive study based on questionnaires, interviewsrnand observations.rnAAU students were the target subjects of the study. However,rninstructors, librarians and personal observations werernused as additional sources of data to verify the validity ofrnthe students' responses.rnChapter one of the study states the problem, describesrnthe purpose, limitations and importance of the st~dy. Chapterrntwo reviews relevant work on reading interests both in andrnoutside of Ethiopia. It also relates the literature to thernpresent study. The study procedure is described in the thirdrnchapter which is followed by reporting of the result in chapterrnfour. The last chapter deals with conclusion and recornrnendations.rnThe result of the study indicates that most of the subjectsrndo read materials not directly related to their courses in theirrnfree time. However, the amount read is very small. Novel,rnmagazine, short story, newspaper and biography are the kindsrnof the reading materials they select to read in their leisurerntime. They appear to have no specific reading interests largelyrndue to lack of variety in the reading materials they managedrnto read.rnEnglish is the language in which the majority of thernrespondents choose to read in their leisure time. However,rntheir leisure time reading in English has a functional ratherrnthan a recreational purpose.
