The main purpose of this study was to investigate the perception and role of EFL studentsrntowards active learning implementation in Adwa College of Teacher Education. To conduct thernstudy, descriptive survey method was employed. And the data were collected from 65 Englishrnmajoring students and four (4) EFL instructors in the college. In the selection of this samplernpopulation, purposive sampling technique was used. The data gathering instruments werernobservation, questionnaire, interview and overviewing of EFL course modules. The datarngathered through questionnaire and classroom observation were analyzed quantitatively usingrnpercentages; the interview and overview of EFL course modules were analyzed qualitatively.rn./'rnThe findings of this study revealed that students have a positive perception towards activernlearning though their participation and other roles on the implementation of active learningrnwere low. Similarly, instructors were infavor of active learning methods. However, they did notrnpractice the methods in the classroom frequently. Relatively the most common active learningrnmethods in which students involved in EFL classes were group/pair work, discussion, questionrnand answer. Most of the active learning methods were found as being implemented lessrnfrequently in EFL classes of the college. Among the external factors hindering the role ofrnstudents on the implementation of active learning were instructors' inclination towards therntraditional lecture method, scarcity and poor organization of EFL modules, large group size,rnshortage of time, lack (j[ feedback and motivation, language problem were the major ones; andrnpersonal factors like shyness, anxiety and fear of mistakes were found to be obstacles that madernstudents lag behind. Finally, so as to minimize the impeding factors, some recommendationsrnwere forwarded by the researcher of this study.
