The main purpose of this study was to find out the mostrncon~on method of teaching reading to beginners. 50 teachersrnfrom thirty one elementary schools were the subjects of thernstudy.rnTo obtain data for the study, a questionnaire wasrndistributed to the teachers. In addition, observation insidernthe class-rooms was carried out by the researcher. Thernteachers' responses were tallied, coded and percentages wererncomputed for each variable. Besides, two background datarnvariables of the teachers were compared with five selectedrnvariables about class-room techniques and methods and wererncross-tabulated to see possible relationships.rnResults of the study show that the most common methodrnIrnof teaching reading was the 'look-and- say' method of wordsrnand larger language units. However, few teachers were usingrna combination of 'phonic', 'word' and 'sentence' methodsrnof teaching. Experience of teachers was found out torncorrelated with their employment of 'eclectic' method. Thernstudy has also revealed that the techniques of word recognitionrnskill were used by an insignificant number of teachers.rnOn the basis of these findings, recommendations concerningrnthe teachers' quality improvement through training andrnpreparation of the text-books are made.
