The Effect Of Different Soils On The Gorwth And Yield Of Some Tef Cultivars

Observation of yields of tef tested in national yieldrntrials (NYT) at different sites and at different times haverngiven variable results. It ~/aS assumed that differences inrnthe tef yields ~Iere probably due to environmental factors.rnTherefore, eleven cultivars (of 1980-81 in the NYT)rnwere seeded on six different soils, collected from differentrnplaces, in plastic pots ",ith a capacity of 2 kilograms in arnrandomized complete design in two blocks and qrown in a areenrnhouse where environmental conditions such as humidity, sunshinernhours, temperature, were identical for all the treatments.rnThe pots containing the plants were watered asrnrequired with distilled water until the olants achievedrnphysiological maturity.rnDuring the growth period, various parameters such asrnheight, tiller number, days to heading were recorded andrnquantified. After harvest dry weight and seed weight ofrncultivars ~ere measured. The data obtained were subjectedrnto various statistical analyses.rnThe results indicated that. the tested tef cultivarsrnadapted better in soils dominated by silt along with aC'equaternquantities of available nitrogen and potassium.
