Demonstrations have been practiced for so long. There are different reasons that compelrnprotesters to exercise the right to peaceful demonstration. For instance, economic imbalancernand wealth distribution between ethnic groups in a given state are some of them. In therninternational and regional human right law the right to peaceful demonstration is the right thatrnis used to exercise other rights and freedoms such as the right to assembly, freedom ofrnexpression and the right to association. Simply put, it is a right that is an implementing agent forrnmany other civil and political, socio-economic or group rights.rnThe main focus of the thesis is on the right to peaceful demonstration under Ethiopian humanrnright system. The difference and compatibility of the right to peaceful demonstration under thernEthiopian human right law with that of the international human right system and regional humanrnright system i.e. African Charter Human and People Right will be examined. The compatibilityrnand difference will be assessed based on the limitations applicable to the right and its normativerncontent as enshrined in the FDRE constitution and other relevant laws such as proclamationrnNo.1/1993 proclamation. There will be emphasis on how the right is implemented in Ethiopia inrnpractice. Thus the purpose of the thesis is identifying the gaps in terms of notification, place, andrntime and other limitations comparing with international human rights instruments; and also willrnidentify the problem of implementation. It takes an objective look into the legal strategies inrnplace and also addresses some welcome changes which might alter the course of the right inrnissue and the application of the concerned law.
