/! is generally estimated that 80 percent of Ethiopia's urban population live in slul1Is. Despite thernhigh incidence of slum and the high need to improve the living condition of the slum dwellers, therncountry's urban areas including Addis Ababa have to date witnessed small number ofresidentialrnarea upgrading programs. By conducting case study on Integrated Holistic Approach-UrbanrnDevelapment Project's neighbourhood improvement program implemented in former Kebele 08,rnWoreda 28 of Addis Ababa, the study assesses the overall impact and challenges faced by IHAUDPrnin its endeavor to improve the lives of the target slum community.rnTo obtain primary data, the random stratified sampling method was used while conducting arnquestionnaire survey. The sample unit consists of household that benefited ./i·om the project.rnFirstly, the ·households were stratified into three strata based on the type of housingrnimprovement pelformed on their residential units. In sum, by using the 10l/e1Y method 246rnhouseholds, forming 30 percent of the total targeted beneficiaries, were selected/i"Ol17 all thernthree strata. The sample comprise of 164 recipients whose previous substandard dwellingsrnwere demolished and replaced by nell' units and 56 and 26 households living in residential unitsrnundergoing major and minor maintenance, respectively. Sim ilarly, 30 percent of recipientsrnbelonging to each stratum were covered by the sample survey.rnAs per the main .findings of the study, IHA-UDP's slum upgrading intervention has broughtrnabout improvement in the overall quality of shelters housing the target beneficiaries. In addition, rnthe community 's access to basic facilities and social infrastructures is enhanced. Throughout thernphases of the project, adequate participation of the target community was achieved. Besides, onrntop of dealing with the physical aspect of the slum sel/lement, through holistic approach, IHAUDPrnhas as well al/empted to address the human aspect of the inhabitants by tackling thernunderlying causes that exacerbate the poverty situation of the slum dwellers. Nevertheless, thernlack of adequate support ji-om local government and absence of resource needed for postintenlentionrnmaintenance of the upgraded in/i·astrllctures remain to be the leading challengesrnfaced by IHA -UDP. The non-provision of resources have great potential to reverse the achievedrnimprovements in the housing and living conditions of the slum community. Ensuring post-projectrnsustainability calls for strong collaboration between the community, IHA-UDP and the localrnlevel government.
