Today, Machine Translation systems have been developed for different languagernpairs, which have a relatively wide use nationally and/or intern atonally. But, thernAmharic language, despite its centuries of existence, has not yet been privileged tornreap the benefits of this technological arena. This study has tried to develop arnprototype translating system that translates texts from English into Amharic. ThernSource language is chosen to be English due to the fact that together with Amharic,rnEnglish is serving as a teaching-learning language in the educational system ofrnEthiopia. The research is an attempt to improve and preserve the role of the Amharicrnlanguage in the current electronic age of commerce and education.rnIn the research, designing and structuring the translation process and resourcesrnimplemented has been customized from the Shakhty Machine Translation (MT) system, rnwhich translates From English to Hindi. The Shakhty kit uses statistical as well as releasedrnapproaches for processing language. It uses constituent structure at the chunkrnlevel and dependency relations at the sentence level of analyses is. It has specializedrncomponents for word sense disambiguation, parsing, Preposition attachment, phrasalrnverb identification, transfer grammar, sentence and word generation, and manyrnothers.rnThe thesis, in short, describes the processes of transfer machine translation systemrnUsing rule-based approach. It discusses the whole process of analyzing the sourcernlanguage, the necessary features of syntactic transfer from the English language intornAmharic and synthesizing the target language. The results obtained using samplernsentences and phrases taken out from the toy article seem to encourage further largessernle research to be launched, especially with the aim of developing a full-fledgedrntranslation system
