This Study eXRmines the Structure of Noun Phrase inrnktstaninna in terms of the X-bar theory formulated by Jackendoffrn(1977) and recent developments. This approach is a recent theoreticalrninnovation in the stage of grammar which falls within the generalrnframework of Extended Standard Theory (EST) of generative grammar.rnThis theory has emerged from the earlier model-i.e. Standard Theory.rnIn this new version, an attempt was made to decrease therndegree of abstractness, the power of transformation was decreasedrnand the rewrite rules of the categorial component were constrained.rnOther theoretical developments such as the introduction of tracesrnand the new con~eption of S-Structures, etc. appeared.rnFollowing Jackendoff (1977) the study assumes three levelsrnof phrasal expansions for a head noun, where a noun is a lexicalrnhead. Accordingly, the following levels of nominals are recognized:rnN(NO), N', Nil and Nil'.rn} Jun is a major lexical cptegory which is found at N(NO)rnlevel and serves as a head of NPs. This category requires certainrnother maximal phrasal categories as its complement.rnThe study shows that the NPs are the only complements ofrnthe derived nominals at N' level. Such complements are inseparablyrnlinked up with the lexical category. The complements in this minimalrnprojection are functional arguments.rnrnAt the intermediate projection, the complements arerngenitive NPs (of source~ purpose, location, time), adjectivalrnphrases, prepositional phrases ~nd relative clauses. All ofrnthem are referred to as restrictive modifiers.rn~he maximal projection consists of non - restrictivernmodifiers as complements - i.e. appositives and some noun phrases.rnRegarding the Np specifiers, it is argued that thesernelements lack the potential for maximal projection. Specifierrnoccur with a noun head in phrasal structure in order to limitrnthe referential or quantitative scope of the head. They includernarticles and quantifiers. Articles are found under N'l' Whereasrnquantifiers are found under Nil'. In other words, they arerngenerated at maximal and intermediAte levels, respectively.
