This study explored eleventh grade students'rndifficulties in speaking and writing, and their subjectrnteachers' concern in improving their student' deficienciesrnin these skills.rnOne hundred and sixty five students and sixteenrnteachers drawn from four high school in Addis Ababa wererntaken as subjects for the study.rnQuestionnaires were designed for both teachers andrnstudents in order to collect the necessary information onrnthe subj ect under investigation. Moreover, test papers,rnexamination papers and exercise books of students were alsornexamined.rnAn analysis of the information thus collected seems tornindicate that the students' ability in speaking and writingrnand the level expected of them in their content subject dornnot tally. Though subj ect teachers were aware of theirrnstudents' deficiencies, they hardly showed effort tornpromoting their language skills.rnBased on this finding, it was recommended that subjectrnteachers need to be made aware of the additionalrnresponsibilities of promoting their students' languagernskills and, thus, work in collaboration with languagernteachers in this regard.
