Land banks are governmental organization that are established for the purpose of convertingrnvacant, abandoned and foreclosed properties into useful factor of production. Land banking wasrnofficially established in Addis Ababa city in 2009/2010 under the urban development, bankingrnand urban renewal project office of Addis Ababa city. The land banking practice has been facingrna number of challenges since its establishment. This study was undertaking with the mainrnobjective of identifying the main challenges of land banking practice in kolfe keranyo sub city ofrnAddis Ababa city. Stratified random sampling and purposive sampling techniques were used tornget appropriate data and address the main objective of the study. The study has found out thatrnthe main challenges of land banking in kolfe keranyo sub city in particular and Addis Ababa cityrnin general include poor organizational structure, lack of modern land information system, weakrnfinancial sources, lack of skilled manpower and weak urban governance system. Since landrnbanking has lots of advantages of economic development of the sub city and has good futurerndevelopment, the government of Ethiopia has to give special attention for the promotion of landrnbanking and effective use of land resources in order to address the future need of urban land forrnvarious development activities and achieve governmental plans of the country.
