Work-related injuries and illnesses of workers in small-scale manufacturing enterprises are onernof the main social and economic problems of developing countries, like Ethiopia. In theserncountries, efforts made to prevent and control these occupational hazards in small-scalernmanufacturing enterprises are low. The government of these countries promulgates laborrnregulation that comprises occupational health and safety for all enterprise but the fetors madernto enforce these regulations in small-scale manufacturing enterprises are almost negligible.rnThe data that are collected through structured questionnaires, visits of workplaces and interviewrnare the basis of this research. The data are gathered from the target group of 70 workers- eachrn14 from multipurpose workshops and woodwork, 16 from metalwork and 26 from construction.rnand 29 employers of small-scale manufacturing enterprises of which 7 from multipurposernworkshops, 10 from construction (blocks production) and each 6 from metal and woodwork inrnGulled Sub-City of Addis Ababa City Government. Stratified random sampling technique isrnemployed to select 70 workers and 29 enterprises.rnThe results of the survey show that occupational injuries and illnesses in small-scalernmanufacturing enterprises in Gulled Sub-City are high and even higher than the countersrnaverage occupational injuries and illnesses of medium and large enterprises. However, thesernoccupational accidents of small-scale manufacturing enterprises in Gulled Sub-City do not havernpermanent effects on the work ability, i.e., the nature of the disablement that resulted fromrnSSMEs is temporary These enterprises are highly exposed to mechanical, physical, andrnergonomic hazards. The results of the research also revealed that the efforts of employers andrnthe concerned government bodies to prevent and control occupational hazards in thesernenterprises are limited. Moreover, occupational health services in small-scale manufacturingrnenterprises of Gulled Sub-City are poorly provided.rnThe results of the study gave some insights towards better understanding oj occupational healthrnand safety applications that may contribute to bring working society of small-scalernmanufacturing enterprises together and initiate a broad improvement of the work environmentsrnof such enterprises.
