The main purpose of this study is to examine the effect of land access on livelihood strategiesrnchoice and its implication toward household wellbeing in land scarce area of soddo zuriarnworeda, wolayita zone. The study has adopted a mixed research method. A multi-stage stratifiedrnrandom sampling was employed to selected 203 sample household from sample kebeles. Crosssectional survey design was employed in order to collect primary and secondary data. Datarnobtained from primary and secondary sources were analyzed using descriptive statistics andrnregression analysis. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the different household socioeconomic, demographic and educational characteristics as well as it also showed thernrelationship between dependent and independent variables using simple statistical tests such asrnchi-square. Participatory wealth ranking and Alkire-Foster methods were used to categorizernhouseholds in to three wellbeing status. Accordingly 52 (25.6%), 105 (51.7%) and 46 (22.7%) ofrnthe households were found to be categorized as well off, moderately well and not well categoryrnof wellbeing status respectively. While the regression analysis includes ordinary least squarernmodel, multinomial logistic regression and order logistic model that were used to examinerndeterminants of land access, household choice of livelihood strategies and to examine the effectrnof land access, livelihood strategies and other household characteristics on wellbeing status ofrnthe household respectively. The result of OLS model indicated that out of the total tenrnexplanatory variable, age of the household, native, distance to city, cooperative participationrn(membership) and wellbeing status of the household were found to be significant and hadrnpositively affect household access to land. Result from multinomial logistics regression showedrnthat age of the household head, total livestock endowment and land access was found to bernsignificant and negatively affect household diversification of livelihood strategies among otherrnthings. Educational status, income of the household and family size were found significant andrnpositively affect livelihood diversification. Order logistics model result also indicated thatrnvariables such as livelihood diversification, land access, education status of the household head,rncredit receive and income of the household found to have positive influence on the householdrnwellbeing status, holding other things constant. The study revealed that attainment of householdrnwellbeing is not easy and determined by different variables. Therefore, intervention and differentrnlivelihood diversification activities should be done by the government and concerned body withrnspecial target to vulnerable and low income groups such as female headed, wage workers andrnyouth.
