777is stue!)! lVas conducted aiming at assessing the impact of productive safety net program onrnrural household jood security at Lema Woreda. To this end, both qualitative and quantitativernapproaches were applied in the study. The instruments used in collecting data were structuredrnquestionnaire. focus group discussion, key injormant interview and jield observation.rnAcconlingly, structured questionnaire was administered to 125 sample household respondents ofrnwhich 77 were male headed and 44 were jimwle headed. 1 03 of the total are public workers andrn22 are direct support beneficiaries. Three independent focus group discussion members eachrnconsisting of eight individuals were conducted. Moreover, nine key informants selected ji'om thernWoreda jood security experts were also interviewed. The analysis of the data were made byrnusing both descriptive statistics like percel7lage, frequency counts, mean comparison andrncorrelalion were applied. The study revealed that the impact 0/ Productive safety net programrnshowing positive correlation with jood security situation to the beneficiaries. Results indicatedrnthat the productive safety net program contribute to food security to the household, throughrnsmoothening food consumption, asset protection, asset creation, meal ji'equency and ./oodrnquality. Despite the positive impact of productive safety net program to the study area, a numberrnof problems have been encountered while implementing the program. Unfair payment of laborrnpower, Un-preferred delivery of safety net Irans/er, deloy o/payment, lack of storage Flcilitiesrn([17(1 a clash with implementation and peak agricultural time were Ihe major problems. Hence, itrnwas recommended that the government should increase coverage of productive sa(ely netrnprogram. Retargeting is needed in Ihe Woreda to filter and reduce illegal benefiCiaries 0/ thernprogram. beneficiaries need assessment should be conducted at the woreda, all/he stakeholdersrncoope['{[t illely ond critically follow the pattern and use of safety net tranlfer of the benejicimyrnhouseholds and in critical time of agriculture and food security activities, there is a need /0rn([/low the households 10 done their homestead work.
