In Ethiopia for the last 8 year starting from the eve of Ethiopianrnmillennium the govemment of Ethiopia has launched SWC andrnEnvironmental rehabilitation works to prevent land and Environmentalrndegradation using massive movement of the people. Land degradationrnin the fonn of soil erosion in Amhara region in general and in the studyrnworeda in particular has reached the point where it will becamernincreasingly difficult even to maintain the present level of production ofrnbasic food which is already insufficient in many woredas of the region.rnBased on this rationale, the primwy objectives of this research was tornassess the role of the CLl/Tent massive natural resource conservationrnwork towards preventing land degradation in the form of soil erosion byrnidentifying cause and consequence of the problem, type and extent ofrnthe change, implication of the change and causes of the positive changernin the study area.rnThe study employed simple random and stratified random samplingrnmethods for data collection and analysis. household survey, focusrngroup discussion, key infonnant interviews and review of secondaryrnsources were used as major data collection methodologies. Fieldrnobservation to observe the contribution of the current massive naturalrnresource conservation work and to see the changes on the ground byrncomparing the data and photos which are documented in the woredarnwere also takes place. Descriptive statistical method (mean, percentage)rnand qualitative analysis were used as methodological tools.rnThe findings of the study revealed that the current massive naturalrnresource conservation program intervention have greatly contributed tornthe protection of the expanding land degradation problem in the studyrnworeda. Similarly, the communal and fann land conservation, gullyrnrehabilitation, practice of different type of conservation works onrnselected areas, changing type and source of feed for animals, the rulesrnand regulation which is seat by the local community to protectrnconserved areas from human and animal, the awareness creationrnprogram which is given by DAs, woreda sector offices and modelrnfanners ( ginbar kedem ariso aderss) have played a vital role in curbingrnland degradation and sustaining the livelihood of the poor which couldrnhave not possible in the absence of these intervention. In addition tornthese the extent of the current massive conservation work, the positivernchange what they seen on their fann land and PAs, the benefit whatrnthey gain from conserved areas also motivated the local community inrnthe study area to accept the program and to participate voluntarily forrn45 days per y ear as a public work in the selected areas and all over thernyear on their private fann land.
