Change in climate and climate extremes are acknowledged as a vital challenge to pastoralrnproduction systems. Alternative systems that are accessible to a household in order to make arnliving could determine the household’s resilience at a given point in time. The present study wasrnconducted in Asayita wereda of Afar region in Ethiopia to assess the resilience of pastoralists andrnagro pastoralist to climate induced shocks and stresses. A household questionnaire survey, keyrninformant interview and focus group discussion were employed to collect primary data requiredrnfor the study. A total of 115HHs (63 pastoral and 52 agro pastoral households) were sampledrnusing stratified random sampling technique for household survey and purposive sampling for KIrnand FGD. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a multivariate methodrncalled principal component analysis to determine the weight (factor loadings) of each resiliencerndimension and compute resilience index at household level. A multiple linear regression modelrnwas also used to assess factors determining the resilience of household to climate induced shocksrnand stresses in the study areas. Accordingly, asset, adaptive capacity, social safety nets, access tornpublic services, income and food access and stability were identified to be the different dimensionsrnused to estimate the resilience status of households in the study area. Further results revealed thatrnpastoralists were less resilient than agro-pastoralists in all dimensions, except social safety nets.rnEnhancing livestock assets and productivity, social safety nets, access to market, credit, extensionrnservices and education, improving irrigation crop farming, and providing farm inputs significantlyrnenhanced the resilience of households to climate induced shocks and stresses. irrigation croprnfarming, livestock ownership, education level, per capita income, mobility and herd splitting, herdrncomposition change, labor, remittance, food aid, access to credit, market and formal earlyrnwarning information were significant factors determining resilience of households to climateinduced shocks and stresses. Therefore, to improve the resilience of pastoral and agro pastoralrnhouseholds, the government and its development partners must target at strategies that addressrnthe above mentioned factors in general and factors related to the adaptive capacity and assetrndimensions for pastoral households in particular in the study area.rnKeywords: Agro pastoralist, Afar, Ethiopia, Livelihood, pastoralist, Resilience
