This study was conducted to find out the effect of social media usage on the academic performance of students in selected public preparatory schools in Addis Ababa, city Government. As quantitative and qualitative approaches were adapted to collect the relevant data of study,a total of 232 participants were selected using stratified random sampling techniques. Questionnaires and in-depth interview were the instruments used to collect data from students. Descriptive statistics, independent t-test, One-way ANOVAs, and Pearson’s Product-Moment correlations tools were employed for statistical analysis of quantitative data, and thematic analysis was used for qualitative data. The study results illustrated that majority of the participants spent 1-2 hours on social media per day; and least for the purpose of social media usage was to gain academic knowledge. As the result of t-test indicated that there is a significant difference between males and females in level of usage of social media per day. But the result of ANOVA indicated that there is no significant difference on age as well as the result of t-test indicated that there was no difference on grade level in frequency of usage of social media per day. The finding of Pearson’s Product-Moment correlations showed that there is a significant moderate correlation between level of social media usage and students score (r= -.576, p=.038). Based on the findings it is suggested that the user (students) of social media should be aware of the negative and positive influence of social media on academic performance; students’ should minimize the time spending on social media to pay more attention for their education; and parents and school teachers should play vital role in creating awareness and orienting students how to use social media without affecting their education.rnFinally, the research showed that there is a strong need to direct priority to the effort that needs to be done in increasing the awareness of parents and teachers on how to help students engage themselves in productive media interactions and communications.
