The Roles And Challenges Of Parents To Protect Teenage Children From Western Cultural Influence A Case Study At Bole Sub City Addis Ababa Ethiopia

This research assesses parents’ awareness towards western culture including its negative andrnpositive impacts. It mainly explores parents’ roles to protect teenage children from westernrncultural influence and to embrace their own culture. It also explores both the internal andrnexternal parental challenges that hinder them to perform their roles. Moreover, it identifiesrnthe potential opportunities both internally and externally to enhance and support parents’ role.rnThe research is conducted in Bole sub city, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. A qualitative researchrnmethod, case study approach is employed to obtain comprehensive data and sixteen teenagernchild/children parents with different social economic background are participated in-depthrninterviewed. Consequently, the finding indicates that participants’ have a certainrnunderstanding towards western cultures in general and majority of them indicated westernrncultures are very influential to teenage children. However, most of the participants’ werernconfident that they are performing their roles to protect their children from western culturalrninfluence but they identified they have not done much to embrace children their own culture.rnThey also revealed that from all forms of western cultures particularly, they are highlyrnchallenged by their lack of awareness advancement of electronic technologies and mediarnexposures of westerns’ and their work situations.rnBased on the study major findings and related literatures general conclusion andrnsignificant social work profession implications are forwarded. Besides a conceptual framernwork is designed to summarize the basic findings and to show the conceptual relationshipsrnwith the aim of the study
