The purpose of the study was to assess the influencernof ESLCE GPA and some lelected factors_on first yearrnScience Students' academic performance. The data analyzedrn. came from a random sample of one hundred and fifty studentsrnenr-olled in the Faculty of Science (AAU) as freshmen inrn1987/88. Regression methods were used to analy-ze the data.rnThe influence of 15 variables on J:'reshman Universityrnperformance of Science students was examined. A t.'ransformrnof the first-semester Freshman GPA appeared to have arnstr-ong linear· relationship with identical transform ofrnESLCE GPA. This finding contradicts the findings ofrnother r-esearchers in this area to-date. ·The performancernof students from Addis Ababa and those from Other Regionsrnappeared· to show a difference. It also seemed thatrndormitory facilities had a positive effect on studentrnperformance. On account of the strong resationshiprnbetween the transformed variables of ESLCE GPA andrnfirst semester GPA, the effect of t he remaining 13 ._ .'.rnother explanatory variables appeared to be very small
