This study was carried out to describe the nature of turn taking patternsrnamong Grade 12 students of Cruise Private School in their grouprndiscussions to see the level of students participation and to explore therninvolvement of the teacher and group leaders in giving and taking turns.rnFor the study, 18 students of grade 12 students of one section werernselected. The students were grouped in to three with six members inrneach. The data was gathered by video recording the discussions and wasrnanalyzed using Allwright’s (1980) model.rnThe overall result showed that the majority of the turns were taken byrnthe students, i.e. (124 or 65.26%) out of the total turns of 190. Fromrnthese, the great majority of the turns were taken trough self-initiatedrnmoves. On the other hand the teacher and the group leaders togetherrntook 66 turns or 34.74% out of the overall turns of 190.rnThe findings further indicated that, out of the overall total of 93 turns,rnthe majority was made by the students, which is 56 or 60.23%. Thernteacher and the group leaders made a total of 18 or 19.35% and 19 orrn20.43% respectively.rnFinally, female Vs male students level of participation indicated that,rnfrom the total of 169 turns, the great majority of the turns were taken byrnmale students (116 or 68.64%) and female students took the lesser turnsrn(53 or 31.36%).
