The problem with which this research is concerned isrnthat of determining the significance of visual aids forrnmaximizing individualized instruction in the teaching ofrnEnglish for beginners as compared to the conventionalrni n struction. Data was secured by selecti n g and organizingrnsix experime ntal and control groups of grades 3 and 4 st u dentsrnin six elementary schools. A total of 720 students werernselected using the systematic sampling t ech nique. Lessons werernselected from English for New Ethiopia series for grades 3 a ndrn4 respectively. Pre-tests were prepared and administered fromrnthe selected lessons for both grade levels and administered.rnAppropriate visual aids were prepared for the lessons selectedrnfor the respective grades.rnThe experimental groups r eceived their instructions withrnsupplementary visual aids in individualized instruction. Therncont r ol groups received their instruction in the conventionalrnway. After the instruction of the lessons , post-tests werernadministered to both grade levels of the experimental andrncontrol groups on the same date.rnThe other two techniques used for collecting the datarnconcerning visual aids and individualized instruction inrnconnection with the teaching of English as a foreign languagernfor beginners were distribution of questionnaire to teachersrnand the observation of the experimental groups using therncriteria of evaluation.rnFrom the t-test analysis of the data it was found thatrnthe experimental groups of both grade levels performed betterrnthan the control groups at a significant level of .05 in thernpost-test. The results of the questionnaire and observationrnshow similar results.rnOn the basis of the findings it was concluded that visualrnaids are effective and can be used to maximize individualizedrninstruction in the teaching of English as a foreign l anguagernfor beginners and the visual aids in the ENE series are notrnsatisfactory to promote individual mastery.rnOn the basis of this finding recommendations are madernthat further research and evaluation on other variablesrn(syllabus, teacher training, text-book, visual aids) shouldrnbe carried out to facilitate the application of the findingrnin this study.
