The main objective of the study was to find out the extent of Englishrnlanguage teachers' involvement in conducting action research, withrnparticular reference to teachers teaching at Colleges of TeacherrnEducation in Amhara Region. In order to achieve this objective,rnrelevant data were gathered from seventeen English languagernteachers, nine from Debre Markos and eight from Debre BirhanrnColleges of Teacher Education. In addition, academic and researchrnvice deans, and English language . department heads, in the tworncolleges, were included in the study. Questionnaires, structuredrninterview and document analysis were used to gather data. The datarngathered were organized by using tables, and analysis andrninterpretation were made on each datum. The analyses were done byrnboth quantitative and qualitative methods.rnBased on the analyses and interpretations, it was found out thatrnmajority of the teachers had the interest and the confidence tornconduct action research. The administration of each college wasrnsupportive of research activities. In this regard, there was provisionrnof resources like finance and incentives even if not sufficient,rncomputer and internet access, stationery materials, secretarial andrnprinting service, moral support from each college for teachers'rnresearch activities. Shortage of time, work load, and lack of adequaternaction research skill were the main constraints for teachers tornconduct action research whereas the supportive nature of collegernadministration to research activities, the training teachers got fromrnthe Higher Diploma Program, the Research and Publication Office,rnthe research finding presentations, teachers' level of qualification,rnteachers' teaching and research experience were facilitating factorsrnof teachers' research activities. None of them had conscious effort tornconduct action research and the extent of their involvement showedrnno improvement.rnTherefore, it was recommended that in order to enhance theirrninvolvement in action research, training programs should bernarranged frequently, there should be pre-planning of the activitiesrnthat are to be carried out in a year, and it is better if teachersrnconduct their action research collaboratively because it can avoid, ifrnpossible, or minimize certain constraints.
