The mam purpose of this study was to examme the relationships betweenrnperceived parental behaviors (perceived parental monitoring, parentalrninvolvement, parental support, and parental punitiveness) and adolescents' selfrnesteem. To this end, a questionnaire that consisted of 72 items was administeredrnto 303 adolescents, 118 girls and 185 boys whose ages ranged between 14 andrn22 years old, selected from four general secondary and preparatory schoolsrnfound in East and West Wollega Zones of Oromia Regional State, Ethiopia. Thernquestionnaire administered consisted of three parts: the first part consisted of 12rnitems that were used to tap socio--demographic characteristics of thernparticipants, the second part consisted of 25 items that were used to taprnparticipants' perceptions of parental behaviors and the third part consisted of 35rnitems that were used to quantify participants' self esteem. Analys is of the datarnobtained from 303 participants using Pearson Product Moment correlation,rnBiserial, Point- biserial, and Partial correlations revealed that perceived parentalrnmonitoring, parental involvement, and parental support were positively related tornadolescents' self esteem, while perceived parental punitiveness was negativelyrnrelated to adolescents' self esteem. All the relations hips revealed werernstatistically significant at 0.01 level of significance. Results of the study were inrnthe directions hypothesized and found to support findings of previous studiesrnconducted in other countries/ cultures . The implication of the study is thatrnparents should involve in their adolescents' lives, monitor them adequately,rnprovide them with necessary emotional support and minimize (or avoid) corporalrnpunishment and all forms of behaviors or actions that communicate punitiveness
