This research is conducted to study the opportunities and challenges ofrnEthiopian television programs for adult health education. Data sources ofrnthe study were individuals from governmental and non-governmentalrnorganizations and target audiences (adult learners). Samples werernpurposefully selected participants that helped the researcher understood thernproblem and the research question. The instruments of data collection werernin depth interviews and focus group discussions. The in depth interviewrnparticipants were mainly selected based on the previous knowledge of thernresearcher, where as the focus group discussion participants were selectedrnbased on the accessibility and audience f eed back toward the televisionrnhealth program and the overall expected health condition and participantsrnage. The first finding of the study shows there is no program which isrndirectly targeted for adult health education. The second finding of the studyrnshows the opportunities of television for adult health educatiQn. Highrninterest of adults towards watching television health education, thernavailability of the health extension workers of ministry of health staffs (forrnfeed back, need assessment and pretest), using different forms of televisionrnprograms, the experiences of other countries, addressing large number ofrnaudiences at a time and having different discipline experts (like mediarnspecialists, health professionals, educational planners) are the opportunityrnof adult health education via television. The third finding of the study isrnabout the challenge. Lack of coordination among the disciplines and limitedrnlanguage transmission in Ethiopia television, number of television sets canrnbe examples. The researcher finally recommends production and prime timerndissemination of adult health education programs via television, usingrndifferent forms like entertainment health education programs, involvement ofrnadults during production, coordination among different disciplines, using asrnmany language as possible and setting evaluation and monitoringrntechnique.
