Measurements Of Vertical Gradient Of Gravity In Zaria Area Of Kaduna State Nigeria

In this survey, the possibilty of using local materialsin the fabrication of a stool that could be used in takinggraviraeter readings at two vertically separated platformswas investigated. It was also aimed at using the stool inobtaining data to be used for the production of a verticalgradient of gravity map for Zaria area of Kaduna State,Nigeria.A LaCoste - Romberg Gravimeter (model G512) was used toobtain data for a total of 121 stations in the surveyarea. The results of the measurements showed that thevertical gradient of gravity in Zaria varies from 2700 to3800E yielding a range of 1100E. A vertical gradient ofgravity contour map was then produced and correlated withthe existing geologic and gravity residual anomaly mapsfor the same area.An analysis of the correlation showed that the lowclosures of the vertical gradient of gravity mapcorresponds to the low closures of the residual anomalymap. Since these low residual closures correspond toimportant geologic features, then the low verticalgradient of gravity closures bear a strong relationshipwith the geology of the area. The correlation alsoshowed that a few oi the residual anomaly closures wererelatively displaced to the East when compared to thecorresponding low vertical gradient of gravity closures.
