The purpose of the study was to assess the provision and utilization of studentrnservices in Jimma University (JU). It was designed to address the areas ofrnadequacy of student services, perceptions of the students and student servicernpersonnel on the level of services provided, utilization of the services by thernstudents, competency of the student service staff, involvement of the stue/ents inrnuniversity service management and problem encountered in provision andrnutilization of the student services.rnThe study focu sed only on certain student services provided in JU such as,rnguidance and counseling, feeding and catering, health and medical,rnaccommodon and library services. To conduct the study, descriptive surveyrnapproach was employed and both primary and secondary data sources werernused to gather injonnation. Mainly used data gathering instruments werernquestionnaires and focus group discussion guide prepared on the basis of thernbasic questions of the study to be addressed. The study was conducted in Ninefacultiesrnof the two main campuses in Ju. The subjects of the study were 350rnrandomly selected students from each faculty and 80 student personnel staffrnselected from the two campuses of JU using stratified s ampling techniques basedrnon their position and job difference. The data were analyzed by usingrnpercentages and chi-square test and interpreted accordingly.rnThe findings of the study in general revealed that none of the student servicesrnwas adequately provided. Additionally, the study showed that, only feeding andrnaccommodation services were being used frequently while, guidance andrncounseling service was never utilized by the students. Furthermore, as revealedrnin the study, the student service staff was facing inadequacy and incompetencernof service personnel in each service sector, while, the involvement of students inrnthe student service management in the university was found to be low. Similarly,rnproblems related to growth in students' enrollment, inefficient utilization ofrnresources and lacle of qualified professionals were found to be the major onesrnencountered in the management of s tudent services. Hence, it was recommendedrnthat necessary interventions should be made by concerned bodies to providernquality services in the university to standardize and give concern for parallelrnexpansion of student services balancing with the number of students entering therninstitution.
