The main purpose of this study was to assess the utilization of active learning, tornidentify factors affecting the implementation of active learning either positively orrnnegatively in terms of teachers` commitment, classroom conditions, instructionalrnfacilities and teachers training. Mixed methods were used to conduct the study. Thernstudy mainly conducted in upper primary schools in Addis Ababa city administration,rnin Nifas Silk Lafto Sub City. Data were collected from 169 teachers, 282 students andrn3 pedagogy instructors of Kotebe college of Teachers Education. Because 75% ofrnteachers were graduates of Kotebe college of teachers education. In the selection ofrnsample population purposive and random techniques were used. The instruments ofrndata collection were questionnaire, interview and observation checklist. The data werernanalyzed using percentage. The findings of the study proved that the implementationrnof active learning was low. Among the factors affecting the implementation of activernlearning, teachers training, teachers` commitment, classroom conditions, class size,rnbeliefs and interests of teachers in their profession were the major ones. Finally, thernfollowing recommendations were forwarded, it is important to conduct in- servicerntraining so that their use of active learning strategies will be improved, Even ifrnappropriate class size may not always be possible, the implementers of active learningrnshould see alternative solutions such as, dividing students into groups, demonstrationrnfields, field trip, laboratories and others. In addition to this, government bodies andrnstake holders have to construct extra classes to solve the problem and In order to solvernthe problems of teachers‟ commitment and lack of interest in the profession, schoolrnadministrators, wereda educational leaders, Addis Ababa City administrationrnEducation bureau and Ministry of Education have to do different awareness creationrnprograms
