Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship 2027 in the USA: Full Tuition Plus a Summer Stipend for First-Year International Students at Vanderbilt University

2026 International Student Financial Guide

Securing a Fully Funded Scholarship is only the first step. Many Nigerian students are now utilizing No-Cosigner Student Loans through providers like MPOWER Financing and Prodigy Finance to cover living expenses in the USA, Canada, and the UK.

Proof of Funds & GRE Waivers

If you are applying to Ivy League or Russell Group Universities, look for programs offering Graduate Assistantships. Many top-tier universities are currently granting GRE and GMAT Waivers for African applicants with strong professional backgrounds or high GPAs from recognized institutions.

WES Evaluation and English Tests

For Canada and the US, a WES Course-by-Course Evaluation is often mandatory. Additionally, if your degree was taught in English, you may qualify for an IELTS/TOEFL Waiver, saving you significant costs during the Graduate Admissions process.

Applications are now open for the Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship 2027, Vanderbilt University's flagship full-tuition merit scholarship for students starting undergraduate study in Nashville, Tennessee, in Fall 2027. Named for the university's founder, Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, the scholarship brings together Vanderbilt's full-tuition academic merit awards under one coordinated programme — and it is open to international first-year applicants, not only to students from the United States.

This is a merit award, not a need-based award. Financial need is not a factor in merit scholarship selection, although Vanderbilt says it will provide additional need-based financial aid to Cornelius Vanderbilt recipients whose demonstrated need exceeds the amount of full tuition. If you have an outstanding academic record, clear intellectual promise, and a strong record of leadership and contribution outside the classroom, this is one of the most valuable undergraduate scholarships in the USA — but the deadline comes before Vanderbilt's Regular Decision admission deadline, so plan backwards from it.

What does the Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship cover?

Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholars receive:

  • Full tuition at Vanderbilt University
  • A one-time summer stipend for an immersive experience following the sophomore or junior year, such as study abroad, a research project or a service project
  • Additional need-based financial aid where a recipient's demonstrated need exceeds the amount of full tuition

The scholarship is renewed each year as long as the recipient maintains at least a 3.0 GPA. Vanderbilt describes it as full tuition plus the summer stipend — it is not described as covering the full cost of attendance, so housing, food and other personal costs outside tuition should be budgeted for alongside the award, unless additional need-based aid applies.

Who can apply? Eligibility requirements

To be considered for the Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship, you must:

  • Be applying as a first-year undergraduate student at Vanderbilt University for Fall 2027 entry
  • Demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, intellectual promise, and leadership and contribution outside the classroom
  • Submit the Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship application electronically by the deadline below

Vanderbilt states that international applicants are eligible to receive any of its merit scholarships, and that international first-year applicants are eligible to apply for all Vanderbilt merit-based scholarships. Transfer students are not eligible for merit scholarships designated for entering first-year students.

Vanderbilt is test-optional for Fall 2027 applicants, and its scholarship FAQ confirms that applicants who apply for merit-based scholarships by the 1 December deadline will be considered whether or not SAT or ACT scores are submitted. For students who do not submit scores, the rest of the academic record — transcript, class position, rigour of coursework, grade trend and teacher recommendations — takes on more importance, alongside the personal essay, short answers and extracurricular record.

How to apply: step-by-step

  1. Apply to Vanderbilt University for first-year undergraduate admission for Fall 2027 through the Common Application, the Coalition Application or the QuestBridge Application. Do this early: you cannot access the scholarship application until you have applied for admission.
  2. Within 2 to 3 business days of submitting your admission application, you will receive an email from Vanderbilt's Office of Undergraduate Admissions explaining how to create your MyAppVU account.
  3. In MyAppVU, go to the Scholarship tab and select the Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship. The scholarship application is strongly encouraged, and preference is given to those who apply.
  4. Upload your scholarship application responses as a PDF or Word document and submit online. After submission you should receive immediate confirmation showing the date of submission, plus a green check mark. If you do not see a green check mark or a submission date within 24 hours, your application was not successfully submitted — check it and resubmit.
  5. The same Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship application is also the recommended route if you wish to be considered for Vanderbilt's additional merit scholarships.

Application deadline: 1 December 2026 — before the Regular Decision admission deadline

The deadline to electronically submit the Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship application is 1 December 2026. Vanderbilt's merit scholarship application deadline is the same date for all prospective first-year students, whatever admission plan you choose.

That timing matters. Early Decision I closed on 1 November 2026, and Early Decision II and Regular Decision admission close on 1 January 2027 — but scholarship consideration still closes on 1 December 2026. Do not wait until the January admission deadline to think about this scholarship, and do not leave your admission application so late that your MyAppVU account is not ready in time to submit the scholarship application by 1 December.

Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship recipients are notified by mail and email at the end of March 2027.
