If you are aiming for an undergraduate degree in England in September 2027 and you have strong grades to show for it, Newcastle University's Vice-Chancellor's Excellence Scholarships are well worth a close look. They can cut up to half of your tuition fees for the full duration of your degree — but they are competitive, and the timetable has two dates you cannot afford to mix up.
Securing a Fully Funded Scholarship is only the first step. Many Nigerian students are now utilizing No-Cosigner Student Loans through providers like MPOWER Financing and Prodigy Finance to cover living expenses in the USA, Canada, and the UK.
If you are applying to Ivy League or Russell Group Universities, look for programs offering Graduate Assistantships. Many top-tier universities are currently granting GRE and GMAT Waivers for African applicants with strong professional backgrounds or high GPAs from recognized institutions.
For Canada and the US, a WES Course-by-Course Evaluation is often mandatory. Additionally, if your degree was taught in English, you may qualify for an IELTS/TOEFL Waiver, saving you significant costs during the Graduate Admissions process.
The Vice-Chancellor's Excellence Scholarship offers up to 50% off tuition fees for international undergraduates starting in September 2027, for the full duration of the degree programme. The exact percentage within that "up to 50%" range will depend on your application, so plan your budget on the basis that this is a generous partial award — not a guarantee of a half-price degree, and not cover for living costs, accommodation, travel or visa costs.
This is a different award from Newcastle's Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarships, which are worth £7,000 per academic year and are considered automatically as part of a course application. The Excellence Scholarships require a separate scholarship application through the Apply to Newcastle Portal. Check Newcastle's regulations for the full list of non-eligible courses and for which other Newcastle awards cannot be held alongside this one before you apply.
To be considered, you must:
Newcastle says eligible candidates will be assessed on evidence of academic ability, evidence of commitment to studies, and the quality of the application. In practice, that means your grades alone are not the whole story — a clear, well-written scholarship application that shows why you want this course, and what you will bring to it, matters too.
A tuition discount worth up to half your fees, held for the full length of your degree, can change the maths of studying in the UK in a real way — especially when it is tied to a university with a large international community and a city-centre campus. The trade-off is the competition: this is a merit award assessed on ability, commitment and application quality, so it rewards applicants who apply early, meet the UCAS deadline, and take the separate scholarship application seriously.
Do not leave the two deadlines to chance. The UCAS deadline on 13 January 2027 comes first and gates everything else, and the scholarship application itself closes on 2 April 2027. Put both in your calendar now, and keep your offer and portal login details somewhere safe.
