Duke Karsh International Scholars Program 2027 In Usa

Duke University Karsh International Scholars Program 2027 in the USA: Fully Funded Undergraduate Study at Duke — No Separate Application

2026 International Student Financial Guide

Securing a Fully Funded Scholarship is only the first step. Many Nigerian students are now utilizing No-Cosigner Student Loans through providers like MPOWER Financing and Prodigy Finance to cover living expenses in the USA, Canada, and the UK.

Proof of Funds & GRE Waivers

If you are applying to Ivy League or Russell Group Universities, look for programs offering Graduate Assistantships. Many top-tier universities are currently granting GRE and GMAT Waivers for African applicants with strong professional backgrounds or high GPAs from recognized institutions.

WES Evaluation and English Tests

For Canada and the US, a WES Course-by-Course Evaluation is often mandatory. Additionally, if your degree was taught in English, you may qualify for an IELTS/TOEFL Waiver, saving you significant costs during the Graduate Admissions process.

If you are an international student dreaming of an undergraduate degree in the United States but worried about the cost, the Karsh International Scholars Program at Duke University is one of the strongest options still open for Fall 2027 entry. It is not a small tuition discount. For scholars with demonstrated financial need, Duke lists tuition, room and board, mandatory fees, demonstrated need beyond those costs, and funding for three summers of research, unpaid internships and other academic opportunities.

There is no separate Karsh form to chase. You are considered through Duke's undergraduate admission and financial aid process — but that also means the aid step is not optional. If you need financial support, you must request it in your original first-year application.

What the scholarship covers

Duke's Office of University Scholars and Fellows describes Karsh International Scholars as an intellectually and civically engaged cohort of international students who promote interdisciplinary inquiry, academic research, and scholarship in the service of society. The programme was founded in 2010 thanks to a generous donation from Martha L. and Bruce A. Karsh.

For selected scholars, Duke lists the following support:

  • Tuition
  • Room and board
  • Mandatory fees
  • Demonstrated need that exceeds those costs
  • Three summers of funding for research, unpaid internships, and other opportunities that will advance your academic career

This is a need-based scholars programme, not a fixed cash award for every admitted international student. The amount of support depends on demonstrated financial need, so a strong academic application alone is not enough — your financial aid application matters just as much.

Who can apply

To be considered for the Karsh International Scholars Program, you must:

  • Be an international applicant applying to Duke University as a first-year undergraduate student for Fall 2027 entry
  • Have demonstrated financial need
  • Apply to Duke University and request financial aid — Duke states clearly that there is no separate Karsh application
  • Show strong academic preparation and documented need for financial aid

Two warnings from Duke's own financial aid pages are worth taking seriously:

  • International applicants must check the financial aid interest box on their original Duke admissions application to receive need-based aid at any point while at Duke. International students admitted without financial aid are expected to fully fund their studies, and financial aid will not be available in later years.
  • There are no need-based or merit scholarships available for international transfer students. Karsh is for incoming first-year students, not transfers.

Duke is test-optional for both first-year and transfer applicants in the 2026-2027 admissions cycle, so students who apply without SAT or ACT scores will not be at a disadvantage. If you are a non-native English speaker or not currently studying in an English-medium curriculum, Duke recommends but does not require an English proficiency test.

How to apply — step by step

  1. Submit your first-year application to Duke University for Regular Decision by 4 January 2027, through the Common Application (or QuestBridge where applicable). Include your high school transcript, secondary school report with counsellor recommendation, two teacher recommendations, and your Duke short essays.
  2. Request financial aid in that same original application. Do not leave the financial aid step until later — for international students, it cannot be added in a later year.
  3. Submit your financial aid applications by 1 February 2027 — the CSS Profile and FAFSA listed on Duke's Regular Decision deadlines page. Duke's CSS institutional code is 5156.
  4. Submit your midyear grade report by 15 February 2027, or as soon as your first marking period grades are available.
  5. Wait for Regular Decision outcomes in late March to early April 2027. There is no separate Karsh interview form or portal to complete at the application stage.

Deadlines to remember

  • Early Decision: 2 November 2026 — now passed
  • Regular Decision application: 4 January 2027
  • Regular Decision financial aid applications (CSS Profile and FAFSA): 1 February 2027
  • Midyear grade report: 15 February 2027
  • Decisions released: Late March to early April 2027

Why this one stands out

Many "fully funded" scholarships still require a separate essay, nomination or portal. Karsh is different: the application is Duke itself. That makes it simpler, but also less forgiving — miss the financial aid box, and you miss the scholarship route entirely. If Duke is already on your list and you have genuine financial need, Regular Decision on 4 January 2027 is still a live, realistic route. Apply early, get your recommendations and transcript in on time, and file the CSS Profile well before 1 February 2027.
