Securing a Fully Funded Scholarship is only the first step. Many Nigerian students are now utilizing No-Cosigner Student Loans through providers like MPOWER Financing and Prodigy Finance to cover living expenses in the USA, Canada, and the UK.
If you are applying to Ivy League or Russell Group Universities, look for programs offering Graduate Assistantships. Many top-tier universities are currently granting GRE and GMAT Waivers for African applicants with strong professional backgrounds or high GPAs from recognized institutions.
For Canada and the US, a WES Course-by-Course Evaluation is often mandatory. Additionally, if your degree was taught in English, you may qualify for an IELTS/TOEFL Waiver, saving you significant costs during the Graduate Admissions process.
If you are a final-year secondary school student with a strong record in leadership, scholarship and engaged citizenship, the Jefferson Scholarship 2027 at the University of Virginia (UVA) is one of the most generous undergraduate awards in the United States. It is a fully funded, four-year scholarship — but there is one crucial catch: you cannot apply for it directly. Your school must nominate you.
Nomination deadline: 1 December 2026 — for both counsellor and nominee materials, in all regions.
According to the Jefferson Scholars Foundation, the scholarship covers, for eight semesters of full-time enrolment at the University of Virginia:
Scholars also benefit from a broad enrichment programme, including international travel, research collaborations with Jefferson Fellows, career development and networking, an Institute for Leadership and Citizenship, alumni connections, an exploratory fund and a speaker series.
The award can only be used at the University of Virginia. It cannot be taken to another college or university.
To be eligible to compete, a nominee must:
Nominees are judged on demonstrated excellence, or exceptional potential, in leadership, scholarship and engaged citizenship. The Foundation states clearly that it does not consider financial need, citizenship status or prior interest in UVA in its selection process — and U.S. citizenship is not required. The Foundation notes that it has Scholars from all over the globe.
Students who transfer schools during or ahead of their final year should be nominated by the school in which they are currently enrolled.
No one may apply for a Jefferson Scholarship. Eligible schools are asked to nominate a student in the senior class who best exemplifies excellence in leadership, scholarship and citizenship. If you are a student or parent, the Foundation's advice is simple: contact your school counsellor and express interest in being nominated.
The nomination form is completed by both school officials and the student:
SAT, ACT, AP and IB scores are not considered for the 2026–2027 selection process, and the University of Virginia remains test-optional.
Accepting a school's nomination simply indicates a willingness to move forward in the competition. Nominees are under no obligation to accept a Jefferson Scholarship if one is offered.
The scholarship selection process is completely separate from the University of Virginia's Office of Undergraduate Admission. To be eligible to receive the scholarship, nominees must have applied to UVA and ultimately gain admission. The Foundation does not have access to the Common Application.
For Fall 2027 first-year entry, UVA's Early Decision and Early Action deadlines of 1 November 2026 have passed, but Regular Decision remains open until 5 January 2027, with teacher/counsellor materials due by 10 January 2027 and decisions by 1 April 2027. The scholarship competition itself does not consider whether a student applies Early Action, Early Decision or Regular Decision.
Nominees can expect information about their status before the end of January 2027.
Bottom line: This is a genuinely fully funded opportunity — tuition, room, board, books and miscellaneous expenses for four years at UVA — but only for students whose schools nominate them by 1 December 2026. If that sounds like you, the first step is not an application form. It is a conversation with your school counsellor, today.
