Securing a Fully Funded Scholarship is only the first step. Many Nigerian students are now utilizing No-Cosigner Student Loans through providers like MPOWER Financing and Prodigy Finance to cover living expenses in the USA, Canada, and the UK.
If you are applying to Ivy League or Russell Group Universities, look for programs offering Graduate Assistantships. Many top-tier universities are currently granting GRE and GMAT Waivers for African applicants with strong professional backgrounds or high GPAs from recognized institutions.
For Canada and the US, a WES Course-by-Course Evaluation is often mandatory. Additionally, if your degree was taught in English, you may qualify for an IELTS/TOEFL Waiver, saving you significant costs during the Graduate Admissions process.
If Canada is on your list for 2027, here is one of the biggest automatic awards in the country: the University of Toronto International Scholar Award is worth up to CAD 100,000 over four years for outstanding international students entering undergraduate study. There is no separate scholarship form — every international applicant is automatically considered when they apply for admission. The date to beat is Thursday 15 January 2027, the final application deadline for most undergraduate programmes, and U of T recommends applying by Friday 7 November 2026 for early consideration.
Key deadline: apply for admission by 15 January 2027 (recommended early date: 7 November 2026). The award is offered upon admission on the basis of merit, so your application for admission is your scholarship application — there is nothing extra to write, no essay and no nomination to chase.
The University of Toronto International Scholar Award is a merit-based admission award for selected international students, paid across four years of undergraduate study. According to the University of Toronto's official pages, the value depends on the faculty and campus:
The total award value is shown on your Join U of T portal when you receive your offer of admission, and the annual amount is applied to your student account after your full-time enrolment is confirmed in September. The award is tenable with other U of T admission awards, unless otherwise stated — the one exception is the Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship, which cannot be combined with it.
This is a partial funding award, not a fully funded scholarship — it makes a significant contribution towards tuition and other fees, but you will still need to pay the balance of your expenses. U of T's own pages say so plainly: students need a realistic financial plan to fund their studies through first year and all subsequent years of their programme.
U of T also offers the Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship, its most prestigious award for international undergraduates, covering tuition, books, incidental fees and full residence support for four years. That is a different award: it requires nomination by your school, and for September 2027 entry the school nomination deadline was 9 October 2026 and the admission application deadline was 16 October 2026 — both have now passed. If you were not nominated, Pearson is closed to you for 2027 entry, but the International Scholar Award is still open: it needs no nomination and no separate application, and it is decided on your admission application by 15 January 2027.
U of T also automatically considers outstanding students for the University of Toronto Scholars Program — around 900 admission awards worth CAD 10,000 each in the first year — and for faculty and college awards such as the International Merit Admission Award (up to CAD 50,000). All of these are decided on your admission application, so one strong application puts you in the running for several awards at once.
The University of Toronto is Canada's top-ranked university and one of the world's leading research universities, with three campuses — St. George in downtown Toronto, Scarborough and Mississauga — and more than 700 undergraduate programmes. The International Scholar Award is one of the most valuable automatic awards available to international undergraduates in Canada, worth up to CAD 100,000 (and more at Scarborough) with no essay, no extra form and no separate deadline to miss. The catch is that the money follows your grades and your timing: a strong academic record and an application submitted well before the 15 January 2027 deadline are what count. If U of T is on your shortlist, apply early and let the automatic assessment do the rest.
Details verified against the University of Toronto's official Future Students, Rotman Commerce and U of T Scarborough pages on 5 November 2026. Award values, deadlines and requirements can change, so always confirm them on the official pages before you apply.
