2026 International Student Financial Guide

Securing a Fully Funded Scholarship is only the first step. Many Nigerian students are now utilizing No-Cosigner Student Loans through providers like MPOWER Financing and Prodigy Finance to cover living expenses in the USA, Canada, and the UK.

Proof of Funds & GRE Waivers

If you are applying to Ivy League or Russell Group Universities, look for programs offering Graduate Assistantships. Many top-tier universities are currently granting GRE and GMAT Waivers for African applicants with strong professional backgrounds or high GPAs from recognized institutions.

WES Evaluation and English Tests

For Canada and the US, a WES Course-by-Course Evaluation is often mandatory. Additionally, if your degree was taught in English, you may qualify for an IELTS/TOEFL Waiver, saving you significant costs during the Graduate Admissions process.

If America is on your list for 2027, here is a rare chance to win merit money at one of America's most selective universities without writing a single extra essay: the University of Chicago automatically considers every first-year applicant for its merit scholarships, with awards starting at $2,000 and running for up to four years of undergraduate study. There is no separate scholarship form — your application for admission is your scholarship application. The date that matters is Saturday 2 January 2027, the Regular Decision deadline for September 2027 entry — and because that date falls on a Saturday, UChicago's own rule moves the effective deadline to the next business day, Monday 4 January 2027.

Key deadline: apply for admission by 2 January 2027 (Regular Decision and Early Decision II; the effective deadline is Monday 4 January 2027 because 2 January is a Saturday). Early Action and Early Decision I closed on 1 November 2026, so Regular Decision and Early Decision II are now the routes still open to international applicants for Fall 2027 entry.

What the merit scholarships offer

The University of Chicago Merit Scholarships are awarded by the College to incoming first-year students on the strength of their application for admission. According to the university's own financial aid pages, the awards recognise outstanding academic achievement, extracurricular achievement, demonstrated leadership and commitment to community — and they are decided without any consideration of financial need, so your family's finances do not affect your chances:

  • At least $2,000 — every merit award starts at $2,000, and awards can be larger depending on the strength of the application
  • Up to four years of funding — scholarships can cover four years of undergraduate study, or funding for summer opportunities, and are guaranteed for four years as long as you remain a full-time student in good standing with the College
  • Automatic consideration — all first-year applicants are automatically considered for all available merit scholarships; there is no extra form, essay or nomination to complete
  • Rolling notification — scholarship winners are notified on a rolling basis through the end of April 2027, and only selected students receive a notification

UChicago also runs the First Phoenix Scholarship for first-generation college students — students whose parents did not complete a four-year college or university degree. Every first-generation student admitted to the College receives a $20,000 scholarship over four years, plus the opportunity for a funded summer Metcalf internship or research placement after the first year.

Need-based aid for international students

Merit scholarships are only part of the picture at UChicago, because most of the university's financial aid is awarded on the basis of need. The university states that it meets 100% of demonstrated financial need for admitted students, with loan-free financial aid packages made up of grants rather than loans. For international applicants, two rules are essential:

  • Apply for aid during admissions — international students must request need-based aid when they apply for admission; if you do not apply for aid at that point, you generally cannot apply for it in later years
  • International transfer students are not eligible — need-based aid and merit scholarships are for first-year applicants only; international transfer applicants cannot receive either

UChicago's Odyssey Scholarship programme also supports students with additional academic, social and career resources, including funding for study abroad, tutoring and paid summer internships. International students who need financial help should therefore submit both their admission application and their financial aid materials by the January deadline, and use the university's own International Financial Aid Worksheet for the aid application.

Who is eligible?

  • First-year undergraduate applicants — you must be applying for first-year admission to the College at the University of Chicago for September 2027 entry; transfer students are not eligible for merit scholarships
  • International students included — international first-year applicants are automatically considered for merit scholarships on the same basis as domestic applicants, with no separate application and no citizenship requirement
  • Outstanding achievement — awards are decided by committee on the basis of the admission application: academic strength, extracurricular achievement, demonstrated leadership and commitment to your community
  • No financial need test for merit awards — merit scholarships are awarded regardless of your family's financial situation, although you should still apply for need-based aid if you need it, since most UChicago aid is need-based
  • Good standing to renew — merit awards are guaranteed for four years as long as you remain a full-time student in good standing with the College

Key dates for September 2027 entry

  • 1 November 2026: Early Action and Early Decision I deadlines — now closed
  • 2 January 2027: Regular Decision and Early Decision II application deadline (a Saturday — UChicago states that a deadline falling on a weekend or holiday moves to the next business day, so the effective deadline is Monday 4 January 2027)
  • January 2027: International financial aid materials are due around the same time as the admission application — submit them with your application, not after it
  • Through the end of April 2027: Merit scholarship winners are notified on a rolling basis
  • September 2027: Studies begin at UChicago's Hyde Park campus in Chicago, Illinois

How to apply

  1. Apply for first-year admission to the University of Chicago through the Common Application or the Coalition Application (Apply Coalition, Powered by Scoir), including the UChicago supplement. That single application automatically puts you in the running for every available merit scholarship — there is nothing extra to file.
  2. Submit by 2 January 2027 for Regular Decision (or Early Decision II if UChicago is your first choice). Aim for 2 January itself; the university's weekend rule makes Monday 4 January the effective deadline, but do not leave it to the last day.
  3. If you need financial aid, apply for it at the same time — complete the university's International Financial Aid Worksheet and submit it with your application. International students who skip this step at admission generally cannot apply for aid later.
  4. Watch for your decision and any scholarship notification — merit winners are told on a rolling basis through the end of April 2027.

Why this one is worth noting

The University of Chicago is one of the world's leading research universities, with more than 50 majors and 50 minors in its undergraduate College, a 5:1 student-to-faculty ratio, and a Hyde Park campus twenty minutes from downtown Chicago. It is also one of the few elite American universities that offers merit scholarships at all — most of its peers award only need-based aid — and it pairs those automatic merit awards with a commitment to meet 100% of demonstrated need through loan-free packages. The catch is the competition: UChicago is highly selective, and merit awards go to a small share of admitted students. But because there is no separate application, no extra essay and no extra deadline, every strong first-year applicant who applies by 2 January 2027 is already in the running. If UChicago is on your list, the application itself is the scholarship application — make it count.
