Securing a Fully Funded Scholarship is only the first step. Many Nigerian students are now utilizing No-Cosigner Student Loans through providers like MPOWER Financing and Prodigy Finance to cover living expenses in the USA, Canada, and the UK.
If you are applying to Ivy League or Russell Group Universities, look for programs offering Graduate Assistantships. Many top-tier universities are currently granting GRE and GMAT Waivers for African applicants with strong professional backgrounds or high GPAs from recognized institutions.
For Canada and the US, a WES Course-by-Course Evaluation is often mandatory. Additionally, if your degree was taught in English, you may qualify for an IELTS/TOEFL Waiver, saving you significant costs during the Graduate Admissions process.
If you are starting a bachelor degree or a coursework master degree at the University of Sydney in 2027, the Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarships Scheme, known as VCIS, is the award to know first. It offers up to $60,000 to exceptional commencing international students, and there is no separate scholarship application. You are assessed automatically from your admission application, once you hold an unconditional offer by the closing date of the relevant round. For Semester 1, 2027, the final round closes on Monday 16 November 2026. The scheme covers undergraduate and postgraduate coursework degrees, and it is open to international students of any nationality, so Nigerian applicants are eligible under the general international rule. This is a partial award, not a fully funded tuition grant.
Five award values are offered, decided by ranking on academic merit:
Two points matter here. First, $60,000 is the maximum, not a promise. Your tier depends on how your academic record ranks against other applicants in your round, and some amounts may be limited to specified cohorts. Second, the award is paid on or after the relevant census date, only if you accepted your unconditional offer by the round deadline and remain enrolled after census date. No other amount is payable beyond your tier.
There is also a cap to know about. If you also receive the Sydney International Student Award, your VCIS is capped at $40,000. Two instalment awards need a minimum semester average mark of 65, with no outstanding fees, for the next payment.
The university's official terms set out the eligibility conditions:
If you are commencing a second degree at the University of Sydney, you are still eligible if you have not previously held a Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarship. Recipients of a scholarship provided by the Australian Government are not eligible at all.
On nationality, the position is straightforward. There is no country list for this scheme. Eligibility turns on international student status, not on where you come from, so Nigerian students who meet the other conditions are eligible on the same terms as any other international applicant.
Selection is on academic merit, assessed from your application for admission. No separate form, essay or interview. Your admission application is your scholarship application, and your academic record decides both your offer and your award tier.
Decisions are made on the nomination of a selection committee of two nominees of the Executive Director, Sydney Future Students, and one nominee of the Admissions Office. The committee ranks applicants, and the five award values follow that ranking. A stronger record decides whether you receive $5,000 or $60,000.
Unlike a graduate assistantship stipend, which pays you for teaching or research work once enrolled, VCIS is a merit based university award decided before you start, from the record you already hold. There is nothing extra to submit, so make sure your admission application is complete and submitted in good time.
One important note on dates. The university's official terms page confirms that the scheme runs in rounds, and that you must accept your unconditional offer by the deadline for your round. The terms page does not publish the round dates, so the dates below are the closing dates reported by scholarship guides for the 2027 intakes. Confirm the current round date on the official scholarship page before you plan around it.
Understand what a closing date means here. It is the date by which you must hold an unconditional offer, not simply the date by which you must have applied. If you miss Round 3, the Semester 2, 2027 rounds start in February 2027, but you would begin your degree six months later.
VCIS is a partial award, and this international student financial aid has clear limits. The top tiers are paid over one year only, so the second and later years of your degree are self funded. The smaller tiers cover one semester only, and the official terms state plainly that no other amount is payable.
You must still fund your living costs, accommodation, Overseas Student Health Cover, travel, and visa costs yourself, plus the balance of your tuition fees beyond the award. A $60,000 award is a very large contribution, but it will not cover your full cost of study in Sydney.
Two more limits deserve attention. The scholarship cannot be deferred or suspended except in exceptional circumstances, so you cannot bank the award and start a year later. If you accept another scholarship administered by the University of Sydney worth more than A$20,000 per year, your VCIS will be terminated. The award can be transferred to another major, degree or faculty within the university, but not to another university.
There is no scholarship form to fill in. Follow this sequence.
No. You are automatically considered once you have applied for an eligible undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree and hold an unconditional offer by the closing date of the relevant round.
Yes. The scheme is open to all commencing international students who meet the conditions, with no country list and no nationality restriction in the official terms. Nigerian applicants are eligible under the general international rule, on the same terms as any other international applicant, provided they hold an unconditional offer by the round closing date.
No. It is a partial, merit based award. The maximum is $60,000, paid over one year in two equal instalments, and the smaller tiers are $40,000, $20,000, $10,000 and $5,000. It does not cover your full tuition fees, living costs, accommodation, health cover, travel or visa costs.
For Semester 1, 2027, the final round closes on Monday 16 November 2026, and you must hold an unconditional offer by that date. Rounds 1 and 2 have already closed. For Semester 2, 2027, the rounds close on Monday 15 February 2027, Monday 22 March 2027 and Monday 3 May 2027. The official terms page confirms the round system but does not publish the dates, so confirm the current round date on the official page.
The Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarships Scheme is one of the simplest high value awards in Australia, because the scholarship application does not exist. Your admission application does the work. That simplicity is also the trap: everything depends on holding an unconditional offer by the round closing date.
If you are aiming for Semester 1, 2027, Monday 16 November 2026 is your last round. Apply for your degree now, chase any missing documents, and accept your unconditional offer as soon as it arrives. If you miss that round, the Semester 2, 2027 rounds give you a second chance, starting in February 2027. Either way, prepare your documents early and confirm the round date on the official University of Sydney Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarships Scheme page before you submit.
