Securing a Fully Funded Scholarship is only the first step. Many Nigerian students are now utilizing No-Cosigner Student Loans through providers like MPOWER Financing and Prodigy Finance to cover living expenses in the USA, Canada, and the UK.
If you are applying to Ivy League or Russell Group Universities, look for programs offering Graduate Assistantships. Many top-tier universities are currently granting GRE and GMAT Waivers for African applicants with strong professional backgrounds or high GPAs from recognized institutions.
For Canada and the US, a WES Course-by-Course Evaluation is often mandatory. Additionally, if your degree was taught in English, you may qualify for an IELTS/TOEFL Waiver, saving you significant costs during the Graduate Admissions process.
McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, offers one of the largest entrance scholarship packages for international students in Canada for Fall 2027. The headline award, the McMaster University Award of Excellence, is worth up to $200,000 over four years, and it sits alongside automatic faculty awards worth $2,500 to $25,000 a year that need no separate application at all.
Most of the money needs only an admission application. The one award that needs a separate application opens on Sunday 15 November 2026 and closes on Friday 19 February 2027 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time.
McMaster distributes more than $20 million in entrance awards each year, with individual international awards ranging from $7,500 to $200,000. What you can receive depends on your faculty, your grades, and whether you apply for the headline award.
Even the top award is not fully funded. International undergraduate tuition at McMaster is roughly CAD 45,000 to CAD 69,000 a year depending on faculty, per the university's published 2026 to 2027 fee schedule, so a large balance remains, plus living costs.
This is the award to aim for if you have a strong academic record and a real record of community involvement. McMaster calls it its prestigious entrance award for international fee paying students who have excelled in the classroom, contributed to their communities, and grown through their experiences.
Most of McMaster's international entrance money needs no separate application. If you are admitted, the university assesses you automatically.
Two awards do need an application. The Wilson College Global Leader Award, worth $25,000 in total for a student entering Leadership and Civic Studies I, needs an application through Wilson College on AwardSpring by Friday 19 February 2027. The Faculty of Engineering runs its own entrance scholarship application, one form covering all eligible Engineering awards, with a deadline of Friday 19 February 2027 and reference letters due by Sunday 21 February 2027.
Nigeria eligibility rests on the general international rule, not a separate Nigeria list, so Nigerian applicants who meet the conditions above are eligible on the same terms as everyone else.
Apply for admission well before your faculty deadline. Your scholarship chances depend on your admission file, and international applicants should allow time for document checks, English test results, and the study permit process.
There is no separate application for the automatic faculty awards. Your admission application is your scholarship application for those.
McMaster only accepts the tests listed on its official English proficiency page, and results must be sent directly to the university electronically from the testing centre. IELTS Academic requires 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 6.0 in each component, and results are valid for two years. TOEFL iBT requires 86 overall, with a minimum of 20 in each component, for tests completed before 21 January 2026, and a new TOEFL scoring scale applies to tests taken on or after that date, so check the official page before you book. The MELD programme requires IELTS 5.0 overall.
No. It is worth up to $200,000 over four years, a very large contribution, but international tuition alone can be about CAD 45,000 to CAD 69,000 a year depending on faculty, and living costs, travel, insurance and your study permit are extra.
Yes. The awards are open to international fee paying students with no country list on the official page, so Nigerian applicants who meet the academic and programme conditions are eligible on the same terms as everyone else.
No. An offer of admission is not required to apply for the entrance awards, so you can apply on AwardSpring as soon as the application opens on Sunday 15 November 2026.
Mostly no. The DeGroote, Humanities, Science and Engineering one time awards are automatic, so your admission application is enough. The exceptions are the Award of Excellence, the Wilson College Global Leader Award, and the Faculty of Engineering entrance scholarships, all due by Friday 19 February 2027.
The McMaster International Entrance Scholarships 2027 are a strong option for international students with excellent grades and a genuine record of community work. The headline award of up to $200,000 is one of the largest entrance awards in Canada, and the automatic faculty awards mean most applicants are considered for money without any extra paperwork.
Admission applications are already open, the Award of Excellence application opens on Sunday 15 November 2026, and the scholarship deadline is Friday 19 February 2027. Start your OUAC application and prepare your AwardSpring answers now.
