Background: Shivering is commonly observed as a complication after Regional Ansthesia;rneven it is more common for urologic operations and causes several complications that havernserious physiologic effects. Pethidine have been thought as a standard for prevention andrntreatment of shivering but it is not without side effects. Studies showed that dexamethasonernalso has promising effect with fewer side effects even though there is controversies about itsrncomparable effect with the standard antishivering drug that of pethidine. rnObjective: The main objective of this study was to compare the effect of prophylacticrndexamethasone and pethidine on prevention of post spinal anesthesia shivering for patientsrnwho underwent transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) . rnMethods: An institutional based prospective cohort study was conducted on 64 patients whornfulfilled inclusion criteria and underwent transurethral resection of the prostate. Convenientrnsampling technique was used to recruit study participants and data was collected by pretestedrnstructuredrnquestioner.rnTherndatarnwasrnenteredrninrnSPSSrnversion 20 for analysisrnofrnvariable,rnrnindependentrnsamplernt-testrnstatisticsrnandrnMann-WhitneyrnUrntestrnwerernusedrnforrnquantitativerndatarnrnthatrnrnwas distributed normally and non normally respectively. Chi square test was used torncompare difference in categorical data. P -value 0.05).There was no statistically significance difference inrnmean time to first onset of shivering between dexamethasone (65minute) and pethidinern(81minute) group (p=0.23).The median consumption of total antishivering medication wasrncomparable between dexamethasone (54.2mg of tramadol) and pethidine (68.8mg ofrntramadol) group (p=0.21).rnConclusion and Recommendation: we conclude that dexamethasone (4mg) is equallyrneffective as pethidine (25mg) that of standard antishivering drug and we recommend the usernof dexamethasone (4mg) as an alternative of pethidine as a prophylaxis for prevention ofrnshivering for patients undergoing TURP procedures under spinal ansthesia.
