Ionic liquids are organic salts with melting point below 1000C. Their unique propertiesrnsuch as negligible vapor pressure, wide ectrochemical window and solvent propertiesrnhave brought about an amazing interest in these salts. One of the most common researchrnareas based on ionic liquids as a solvent focuses on homogeneous catalysis since ionicrnliquids are found to be ideal immobilizing agents for various classical transition metalrncatalyst precursors. In the present study we have tried to synthesize new ionic liquidsrnbased on phenanthroline taking in to account that it could easily dissolve transition metalrncatalysts based on phenanthroline due to similar structure it possesses. In the presentrnwork, new and monoalkylated salts based on phenanthroline, have been synthesized andrninvestigated. An attempt to dialkylate this salts failed due steric and electronic factors.rnThese Salts were characterized by various physical and spectroscopic techniques:rn1HNMR, 13C NMR and elemental analysis their melting point, conductivity, miscibilityrnwith water and organic solvents were determined. The influence of alkyl substituentrnalong with nature of the anion on the NMR chemical shift of the neighboring hydrogensrnis also discussed. These compounds were also analyzed by melting point and factors suchrnas size of the anion, delocalization of the charge interaction between the ions andrndisorder(asymmetry) in the cation affected the packing of the ionic liquid and thereby thernobserved melting point.rnKey words: ionic liquids 1, 10-phenanthroline, quaternization, homogeneous catalysis
