A new Cu(II) chelate formed by the derivatization of the ninhydrin with ethylenediamine (en) in thernpresence of CuCl2 .2H2O, was synthesized by template procedure in ethanolic medium. The purity ofrnthe complex was established by thin layer chromatography and sharp melting point. The complex wasrncharacterized on the basis of chemical analysis, conductivity, IR spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, rnand magnetic susceptibility studies. The results suggest the formation of a 1:2 condensed productrnbetween ninhydrin and ethylenediamine, which behaves as neutral NNONN donor towards Cu(II).rnThis new pentadentate ligand resulted in the formation of a novel metal chelate of the formularn[MLCl]Cl.2H2O with a proposed stereochemistry of distorted/elongated octahedron.
