This paper examines the relationship between urban poverty andrndeforestation in the peri-urban region of Ginchi, Ethiopia. Thisrnanalysis is carried out through the examination of ParticipatoryrnForestry Management (PFM) using the Five Dimensions of UrbanrnSustainability and incorporating them into the stages ofrnEnvironmental Planning and Management. Primary research revealsrnthat the high level of dependency of the urban poor has a direct effectrnon deforestation and thus any attempt to address the one problem willrnimpact the other. However, I also found that the environmentalrnproblem was not exclusive to urban poverty but a result of weaknessrnin all Five Dimensions. Therefore, Participatory Forestry Managementrnis dependent on strong macro-level or other lobbying, whose successrnwould be subject to the given context. In situations where this is notrnapparent, a flexible or alternate program must be implemented tornaddress the environmental problem
