Complexes of Mn(II), Fe(III), Co(III), Co(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II) with two differentrnintermediate Sohiff bases, one derived from ninhydrin and serine (Indane-l ,3-dione-rn2-imine-N-2-(3-hydroxy) propionate, IDIHP) and another derived from ninhydrin andrnalanine (Indane-l,3-dione-2-imine-N-2-propionate, IDIP) were successfullyrnsynthesized. All complexes were distinctly colored and were characterized byrnelemental analysis, molar conductance, infrared and electronic spectral studies. Thernligand (Schiff base) was shown to behave as a monobasic tridentate ONO donor. ThernMn(II), Fe(III) complexes of both Schiff bases and Co(II) complex of IDIHP werernfound to contain only one ligand molecule plus water and chloride(s) per metal ion, rnwhile all the others contain two ligand molecules per metal ion. An octahedralrngeometry is proposed for the metal complexes.rn> In light of the anti-microbial activity of ninhydrin, comparative anti-microbial studyrnof the complexes was undertaken against two gram-negative bacteria Escherichia colirnand Proteus mirabilis and one gram- positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. It wasrnrevealed that most of the complexes of both Schiff bases and particularly Mn(Il),rnFe(III) and Co(II) complexes, have a much enhanced activity than ninhydrin againstrnP. mirabilis and S. aureus. All complexes except Co(II) complex of IDIHP showed arnreduced activity against E. Coli.
